I leased a Focus Electric for 3 years. Since the range for the car is so short, I have to charge it to 100% every night. When the car is new, it has a range of 81 miles, but when I returned the car, it has only 60 miles. The reduction in range is quite significant.
One of the reasons I chose the extended range option is so that I can mostly keep the charge between 40% and 75%.
On a long road trip, other than starting at 100%, on the road, you will only be charging to 80%. It takes too long to go from 80% to 100%.
