In my area, the Mach-e is showing up for sale used by several dealers at decent prices. Is there anyway to determine if a car has any potential for problems or can you determine if the known problems have been dealt with? What is the general opinion on buying used? Smart or taking a risk ? I know there’s no way to guarantee no problems but would like it to be limited at least. All opinions are welcomed. Thanks.

I think I would want my first year of owning a used vehicle to include "bumper to bumper" coverage so that I could make sure everything is in good working order as I use the vehicle through four seasons.

This is true for any used car for me. I can't think of anything special you'd want to check for with regard to the Mach-E.

You should also get the CarFax or similar report. You can do that research yourself, of course, but let the experts do it--it's much cheaper. CarFax doesn't always report on outstanding recalls, so get the VIN and check the NHTSA for outstanding recalls.

I never trust Carfax or Experian Auto - they rely to reports by service, repair, collision, insurance etc..

It only works if it gets reported.
Some independent repair shops do not report.

I always get an independent 3rd party inspection that I choose and pay for before I buy a used.

Did that with a used Land Rover and the dealer was sneaky to clear the OBD/ trouble codes and generate a CarFax report (because it was not driven much due to being in service dept for over a year) that had no reports of any issues.

Next day, my trusted mechanic found over $8000 of repairs (air suspension faults, replaced inner apron fender, leaky oil rings with 2 cylinders not igniting, and steering faults).

Returned it under the AAA agreement I had them sign.

Best $125 I spent.

I guess I just assumed everyone gets the vehicle checked by an independent 3rd party. But, yes, that needs to be done as well. That said, I have had some really flakey 3rd party inspections too.

CarFax does the VIN-related research, it cannot report on anything that hasn't been filed properly.

I would want to make sure that the HVBJB has been replaced with the “better part”. i don’t know the proper part number but others on here can help.

also as someone mentioned above, make sure any recalls have all been taken care off. The software fix for the HVBJB would not be good enough for me.

Amen! And as mentioned it would need the correct part number or essentially to have been replaced (or car built) after May 25, 2022 which is when the new part became available.

This.

Personally I'd avoid early 2021 because of issues where updates could not be installed. My friend almost lemon-ed / buybacked his early 2021 MME but instead sold it to Driveway. These cars are floating out there.

There may be issues with 2021 job 1 cars, but mine (built 1/25/21) has no issues with updates. I got 4.2.2 OTA about 2 weeks ago.

No frunk button, though!

It's a crap shoot.

There is a higher probability somebody selling/dumping their problematic early 2021 when the market was hot.

I've owned a Job 2 2021, a Job 1 2022, and a Job 2 2022s... and I'm still driving the last one. Ford has definitely polished their firmware/modules over time. The Job 1&2 2021 DC charging curve was unacceptable over 80% SoC. If car can't take updates... I would not want to be stuck with a car that can only DC charge at 9 kW over 80%
