Has anyone heard of this? The other day I was backing out of my garage and suddenly heard a loud crunch. Turns out the cargo door opened after I started backing up and scraped the garage door. It's going to cost about $3000 because both plastic back light covers are cracked. I have no idea how it happened and my husband said it was my fault because I must have opened it or didn't notice it was open. (I had started the car from the PAAK because it wouldn't recognize my phone. ) Mea Culpa I guess - no other explanation.
Well, today, I was approaching the car holding the phone in my hand (no key fob on me). FordPass wasn't activated and I was holding the phone around the edges - not on the face. As I got closer to the car, the cargo door opened. WHAT? Has anybody heard about anything like this? I'm going to call my dealer but I bet they won't believe it.
Advice?

I’ve never never heard of this, but I’m confused at this statement?
I had started the car from the PAAK because it wouldn't recognize my phone. I guess I’m still new at this but PA AK means you have to have the phone and you said it doesn’t recognize your phone so I’m just a little confused sorry but I haven’t heard what happened to you.

Just from ordering a new key fob that must be 315 MHz. I’m curious to whether a garage door opener on the same megahertz could possibly have caused that if you open the garage door, I don’t know. Just trying to help you figure it out.

I can see the confusion. When I enter the car with my phone, sometimes it automatically recognizes me and starts. Other times, it says the key isn't recognized and I have to put in the code on the screen - HOWEVER, it takes so long for it to appear that I end up using my phone to start the car - using the start button in the app. I hope that makes it clear.

Thanks but today I was in an open area parking lot with only about 3 cars when it happened. Strange.

It does clear that up somewhat but if the phone is starting the car, then the phone is PAAK so PAK is actually working

I guess I have not set up my car with the schedule so I guess if you schedule your car, it will start automatically as you approach the car or it starts on a certain schedule. I didn’t know.

So my copout is I’m retired. I don’t need to set a schedule so my car never needs a departure time so I don’t play around with that. I don’t create any profiles, that’s another thing I would not create a profile on a car if you’re driving it, I’ve seen cars, come on guys help me out here!

Based on your description I assume you're talking about the rear hatch/trunk. Yes, there are a number of threads where owners have reported it opening on its own, some with similar damage. I'm not able to locate then via search, but others may be able to share links.

It has happened to several people here. It happened to me. I was pulling into a parking spot at work. I switched the car into park and was about to turn it off when my frunk and trunk both popped open at the same time.

This has happened to be several times over the past, oh, probably one year period. A few times people at work have come into the office and asked me if I knew my car hatch was open. Other times it's happened as I'm walking up to it (work or home), and a few times I have found it wide open in my driveway when I went outside in the morning. And one of those times it had rained pretty hard the night before. No rhyme or reason that I can figure. Has happened whether I had my phone/PAAK or if I was using the key fob (and I know for a fact the hatch button was not being pushed on either one).

So it appears you are NOT crazy. ?

And although it doesn't help with your damage/repair, there's a perfect stranger on the internet that believes you.

Oh I hope this isn’t going grow into one of those increasing faults coming to light. My dogs travel in the boot (trunk) and although they are restrained I hate to think of what could happen if the boot lid opened by itself on an open road!

I found the thread from last year about the Liftgate opening on its own. Who do I contact at Ford about this? Ford, if you are reading this, please let me know who to contact. This latest incident is costing me a lot of $ to repair.

Back in the day, there were reports of people having the hatchback door open due to small animals scurrying underneath the car. Happened to us once, but only once. I'm guessing they tweaked how they analyze movement below the back bumper as we haven't had that happen since that one time -- and likely that's not the problem you're having. Note that I reset how high the trunk door would open so that it wouldn't hit anything, which you might want to try.
