I would use even stronger language. It is pure, unadulterated codswallop! This is legislative imagination gone wild and at a cost. The reasoning is that EVs have to be easily identified and the more EVs on the roads the more others will want one. Total speculation and Poppycock..
Why would anyone care? Is there a certain $ amount that dictates compliance? But, what is the penalty/fine if you DO NOT display the EV sticker?
I opted to get the EV license plate because I didnt want the sticker. Never heard of such a thing as people dying to keep the default plate. I think they just dont want to pay the annual fee to get a special one. The EV plate is free.
I dont think there will be any penalty for not properly displaying the decal or the special plate. You must either buy the sticker ($4 isn't it) or the plate. You can choose not to install the sticker since there is no penalty.
The EV Plate is not free. There ia a charge for the plate and the month and year stickers. A relatively small charge but not free.I opted to get the EV license plate because I didnt want the sticker. It's the responsibility of the citizens to monitor the actions of the government. Why would anyone care? Is there a certain $ amount that dictates compliance?
Driving a car is a privilege. Privileges come w/ rules, regulations and laws. Break or defy them, lose the privilege. I learned that before I was even close to any driving privilege.
Don't display the sticker. Don't put on any license plates. Don't get a driver's license. Don't purchase insurance.
Don't whine when you get the fine
I just renewed our registration online before we left on this current trip. I see our USPS mail notification shows both the normal plate sticker from the county AND a letter from the state that's surely the decal. That sucks. I have no interest in displaying a stupid decal in the window either. I'll probably stick it in a side corner in the back or something. From driveelectriccolorado.org:
The idea for this bill was birthed behind the concept of making every electric vehicle a ‘mobile billboard’ of sorts to advertise the electric vehicle ‘brand’ as a whole. When people become more familiar with a car, they’re more likely to buy one and are also more likely to follow what their neighbors and community are doing rather than diverging on their own path.
This illustrates my point. Colorado is using my car as an advertising tool without compensation. I'm not sure that's legal.
The plate is fine, the decal is fine, but don't make it a requirement.
They seem to think that an EV is a fashion statement. That anyone can rush out and get one.
Is walking a privilege? Eating? Breathing?Driving a car is a privilege. Privileges come w/ rules, regulations and laws. Break or defy them, lose the privilege. I learned that before I was even close to any driving privilege.
Interesting that you got both the plate and the decal.I agree that the plate looks great, the decal not so much. The problem is that they're mandatory.
I remember when the mountain plate was discontinued and people fought to get it back.
Yep. I hate the heavy-handed govt mandate crap too, but that's Colorado these days. Sure not the independent Colorado I grew up in.I agree that the plate looks great, the decal not so much. The problem is that they're mandatory.

From the Colorado Legal Defense Group ...OK I will ask again. Since I have a Handicap Plate I have no choice but to get the Sticker. They say it is mandatory to display the sticker. However, I can not find anywhere where or what is the penalty/fine for not displaying the sticker? How will it be enforced?
This question has nothing to do with the fees being assessed. That is handled automatically by the registration process.
It has been my long held belief that annual Registration laws/rule/revenue need a major overhaul with the shift in fuel from gas/diesel to more electric. gas tax collection will not work much longer.....CO assesses an Electric Vehicle Fee for EV owners. Started at $50, now is around $52. Most certainly will increase over time.
I, like many EV owners, pay no gasoline taxes which theoretically help to maintain infrastructure.
The Electric Vehicle Fee will hopefully(springs eternal) help to maintain the infrastructure.
All users should be assessed user fees. But that is no longer the case. - ex.: Know any bicycles that are registered, licensed, insured? (mine was, in my youth, long ago).
