Here in Arizona, practically everyone has glass coverage. I've repaired 5 chips and one full window replacement on my previous car. Never had an issue with State Farm.
All full coverage insurance in FL has windshield coverage so it doesn’t cost you anything. I have a 2013 Outback and when I had my first windshield replaced about 3 years ago then I got my insurance renewal and Progressive increased my 6 month premium by about $100 for filing a claim. Still paying this increase 3 years later. I’ve replaced my windshield two more times for about $250 each time paying cash. Not worth it to file with insurance when it basically costs me about $600 or more.

It will be different when the new windshield is over $1000!

I also don’t think Safelite uses OEM glass because I get chips and cracks all the time now and didn’t for years with the OEM glass.

Safelite purchased the glass from Ford. At least that is what happened here in AZ. Says Ford on it with all the necessary markings. IRR etc....

Many people don't pay attention to details on their insurance policies. Having a separate glass deductible, even zero, is available in many states.

Full glass coverage with no deductible on my Mach-E is $88 a year, less 20% dividend,, i.e. $70.40. My 2013 F-150 is $19.20.

Ask your insurer before you have a loss.

My insurer doesn't increase premiums for glass claims.

Those that choose the cheaper companies get what you pay for.

Interesting.
It was the dealer that said it needed calibrating. Now I will check the WSM and see what it says.

I know the Jeeps don't require recalibration so it makes sense this car might not need it either. Hmmmm...
Yes, interesting. Nice to have good information to tuck away. There’s always the BS to make an extra buck!

Mine has been recalibrated with each windshield replacement. First time at the dealership, second time at Safelite. Not sure that either made any difference. In theory it should not need to be recalibrated because of the alignment pins. The workshop manual says to do it but it really could be a left over process from earlier vehicles. We have found things in the shop manual that are still from the ICE days to we take things with a grain of salt sometimes.....

In my case, it's all covered under the insurance policy so there isn't any reason for me to refuse the calibration. Plus later on, if/when something does malfunction then they can't say "well sir, you had your windshield replaced without calibrating the equipment.....blah, blah, blah".

For anyone who is interested. Safelite's workmanship was every bit as good as the dealership. Possibly even better because they didn't lose any clips for the under hood cover panels and they replaced the visor tint strip that I added to the windshield. Win-Win for me. :)

Good point. That’s always written in the second line, “I told you so and you didn’t.”

Like what @RickMachE said, there was no premium increase. Must depend either on state or insurance company.

Also your right about OEM glass. When I had my windshield replaced by safelite, they didn't use OEM and it was definitely inferior.

Let me know when you need your windshield replaced. Safelite can definately get you the OEM glass. Here is the photo from when I picked up my car. Safelite on University and SR143. New wiper blades were $32. Kinda pricy but that was how I ended up with the visor tint. :)

Yeah but you have to ask for OEM. Lesson learned.

Whether or not OEM parts are used is likely at the direction of the insurance company. Some policies specifically cover OEM replacement, others do not.

When I inquired with the agent at Safelite she said the only way to get the IRR and heated glass was OE. I don't know if that is true but it definately is a Ford part same as original.

I think you are correct. I had three windshields replaced at the same time. My agent said OE glass was required for the Mach-E because it was a Premium trim model. For the Jeep, I had my choice of OE or aftermarket. I chose the Mopar OE glass because it has the original military Easter egg Jeep etched into the glass down by the lower right corner.

For the Super Duty pickup... I didn't care and told him to use whatever is available.

When I got that online quote from Safelite at the start of this thread, I later called the local Safelite place to confirm whether that was for EOM or not. It wasn't. OEM glass was something like $300 more. The default in this case was no OEM (i.e. just the cheapest).

May not always be that way, and it may vary from shop to shop. But it's definitely something to confirm when getting a quote.
