Planning on hardwiring my Viofo a129 dash cam, but wanted to ask if anyone has done the same without using an external battery?

Just concerned about the 12v draining when using parking mode

I would try to set the limit to 12.2V. Put the switch so you can easily access it later to change to 12.0V if needed. You are going to put a greater load on your 12V battery which will shorten its life expectancy. The best way is to use an external dashcam battery, but it's pricey.

Thanks. I was looking at the external batteries, but because of the price I was wondering if it’s doable going without.

Instead of external power backup for the dashcam, you will bear the cost of a new 12V battery, sooner or later. Then again.

MME has issues with the 12v battery anyway.

This thing makes install a breeze: https://a.co/d/g1MUmVb

However, it connects to ignition power (turns off with car) so for your parking mode, I also suggest a battery pack. I'm pretty sure there's room in the headliner for a decent size one. Plug this adapter into the charge port of the battery park, and then the dashcam into the battery pack. That way, you only ever kill your dashcam battery pack and your 12v remains safely charged. You don't want to risk coming back to a dead 12v battery, that's never worth it.

Any tutorials for how to wire this thing up? Also looking for a dash cam recommendation if you have one.

Most people here know my thoughts on this, but yes you should be concerned about 12V drain and use an external battery pack if you want the camera to stay on.
