DC Charging Speeds (Standard Range)

I have a Standard Range Premium which is able to DC charge at a rate of max. 115kW for a short period of time. Overall I think that the 10-80% charge speed is a bit sluggish with more than 40 minutes to complete.

Do you guys think Ford will be pushing OTA to improve charge speed in the future? Other brands with comparable architecture (400 V) and battery sizes seem to be doing much better in the charge speed department? Maybe Ford is just playing it safe to avoid warranty claims on the pack?

Many agree the current DC charging routine is conservative and there have been indications from Ford that may be updated via OTA in the future.

That sounds encouraging! I totally get that Ford plays it safe, but hope they'll give us some good updates as their cars out in the field prove to be doing all right with little warranty claims.

The Premiums are rated at 150 kW. Are you saying you’re only getting 115?

That actually should show Standard Range up to 115kw, and Extended range up to 150kw. The smaller pack has less cells in the pack, so it can't get the same speed of charging.

I can tell you I've never seen 150kW. Maybe 126. And run rate tends to slow to mid 90s. This is pre-courtesy update.

It should say "up to" x speed. The vehicle can't charge at a constant speed. ( assuming speed is measured in kW....)

I can confirm that the standard range battery packs are only coming with 115 kW charging. Only the extended range gets 150 kW charging.

Oh I totally get that. I’ve never seen over 100, but I know it’s capable.

Not really. It says 'UP TO' because Premiums could be standard range or extended range.

I think it was qualified with an asterisk in the order guide. Been a while since I ordered mine but I remember being confused because I wanted a Premium AWD with SR battery and I wasn't sure what the DCFC max speed would be. I think it was clarified later and it has to do with the battery module count. I think SR is 3P and EX is 4P and the extra pack allows for more watts to be delivered via DCFC so hence the higher kW number.

That makes sense. I am by no means a battery expert, but how do Tesla and others achieve 200+ kW and better sustained charging with similar size battery packs? Just getting my hopes up for better charge speed in the future

Its all determined by how the battery pack is configured. Tesla uses small cylindrical cells, and the Mach E uses pouch cells.

Telsa's have over 7000 of those cells per pack, and the Mach E has 288 cells in the standard range pack, and 376 cells in the extended range pack.
