When they make an EV super duty truck that can tow a 16k 5th wheel and still get around 270 miles per charge doing it, I'll consider going full EV. For now, my Ram 2500 diesel will do.

It will be interesting to see if they can make an EV super duty work in the next 40 years. It takes a lot of energy to pull something like that (rough estimate: 30 gallons of diesel = 1,200 kW). Even if solid state batteries become economically viable, it's gonna take a while to charge even with a a 350kW charger speeds of today.

Our two daily drivers are 2021 MMEs. The others are my husband’s antique ones (1930-1966). Although he is known to take an old British car to the grocery store ?. I’ve taken my MME from NC to MN twice, and from NC to northern IL a few times. Definitely enjoy the EV life ?.

I'm a failure. Not something that I'm used to. I couldn't do it. I traded my ICE vehicle in on the MME six weeks back, hoping only to own it, but I couldn't hack it.

Yesterday, I woke up thinking about taking my favorite desert drive now that the temps have cooled—the scenic trip from Vegas along Lake Mead to a little hole-in-the-wall town called Moapa Valley. She drives. I watch the desert flash by. At Moapa, we stop at a McDonalds. I usually order a fish sandwich and a hot fudge sundae. She gets a cheeseburger and a milkshake. We eat our little unhealthy snacks in Poverty Flats among the destitute who live in vehicles or RVs parked on the edge of a big drop-off before following the same majestic route to return. It's a soul-cleansing trip made for whisper mode as you wind the curves and descend the hills. We also like to venture off the beaten path, detouring down to the Colorado River in some spots, adding many miles to the trip. But the map says it's around 164 miles in one direction and another 90 or so back. And the reviews say the one available charger out there is frequently broken. It's just too much of a worry. Comfortably using climate control, we're averaging around 200 miles of range.

Instead of making the trip, I bought a second vehicle—a new 2023 V6 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 with 420 miles of range for a mere $38k.

So, I'm back to polluting the desert. But at least I can still roam at will.

I'm sorry, MME. The world isn't built for you yet.

Been saying this for a while. EVs are amazing for in town driving and home charging if you can afford to do it. As a full time replacement of an ICE, no way.

We're a two EV household. Our longest drives are to see our folks which are each about 70-80 miles away. Very easy round trip in any condition.

If we need a longer road trip every now and again and we don't want to plan for charging stops, we rent.

It seems...really silly to buy a vehicle for a random infrequent drive use case when you can rent for 40 bucks a day.

We also don't own a truck. When I need one I rent one from home depot.

We buy for the 98%, find a workaround for the 2%

The options don't fit us either. We have a 96 Miata that we use to go to get ice cream cones from Vic's Ice Cream in the summer. It sees about 100 miles per year and is at all other times covered in our garage. We're not about to get rid of the Miata, but we love our 23 MME Premium

Ah let me hijack this thread, I had a 91 Miata in racing green. I loved that car. The only downside was that it was a bit anemic. Yours has the bigger engine. My wife had a Honda CRX at the time. My dream was her engine in my car…. BUT, to get back on topic, I’ve got a MME and a Fusion PHEV, so almost full electric. And I’m seriously considering selling the Fusion and replacing it with a golf cart. That would then be fully EV!

I don't care for the survey answer choices, but we're split. Our other car is an ICE SUV that is probably in it's last years with us and will be replaced by a hybrid at the very least, or a PHEV. But, until then the most economical and environmentally friendly choice is for us is to just drive the car we have.

At work there are three people that own an EV. All three of us own more than one.

Everyone else at work has no interest in owning an EV.

I think odds are that once the first EV is purchased a second will follow.

At my work we have a few Tesla owners and when I first plugged in my wife's FE to charge a lot of people wanted to know more about it and figured out who owned it. Once it was known that it was mine there was a lot of questions about it. This was back in 02/2021 before we had our home charger installed so I would charge the FE for my wife once a week. Since then we have 2 more Mach-E owners here at work with a other EV's (Bolt, ID.4, Polestar) along with several more Tesla owners. Percentage wise with over 1000 employee's EV ownership is still very low... going by the parking lot at least. I'm sure some have a EV's that never set foot in our parkig lots.

Now my Taycan is garnering attention in the parking lot... mostly because I went from a 2020 Fusion Plug-in to a Audi A7 to the Taycan over a 6 month period.

To answer your poll, we have 2 EVs and one ICE F-150. The F-150 is not used for daily driving, just when a truck is needed for hauling and towing.

Just made the plunge to dual EV's. Much easier to do in CA I am sure. Won't last long, gotta get another car for the kid to drive.

Surprised by how many people have made the full switch. I still have my gas lawn mower and get strange looks when I pull up at the gas station to fill it up.

I guess you can say my family is full of hybrids. We have both EV and ICE and we like both but won't live with just one type. If we had to make a choice all EV or all ICE, ICE would win.

Back in 2019 the only interaction I ever had with a Hybrid or EV was a Prius rental while we were in Japan. At first I joked the car was karma for all the Prius bashing I did over the years but by the end of the rental I didn't hate the Prius. As far as I was concerned it drove like any other Toyota out there from a quality standpoint. And it returned 55MPG even though I drove the car like it was a rental. So later in 2019 when I replaced my 2017 Mazda 6 daily commuter I added a few Hybrid's to the list... I ended up going with the Fusion as it had a great comfortable ride and huge incentives when compared to the Accord and Camry. And after 1 week of Hybrid ownership my wife saw the Mach-E and the 2019 LA Auto Show and said she wanted one. Wow.

So here are are now 4 years later after the Fusion purchase and almost 3 years after purchasing the Mach-E and we are OK with EV ownership but we will never be a fully EV family. And outside of road trips of 500 miles or less we leave the EV at home. Like the OP we have a home in Las Vegas as well as our home on the Central Coast of CA and both areas are limited on fast charging. We travel back and forth monthly between the two and taking our FE or Taycan to Vegas can be a PITA.

The charging infrastructure is just not there and we have seen it get worse since 02/2021 as there are far more EV's on the road. A 460 mile trip to Vegas in the EV can add 90 minutes to 3 hours more in time because of full chargers or broken chargers. Our FE and Taycan have about the same range so we would stop once somewhere near Barstow and every time I look at EA chargers they are showing full from the Victorville/Hesperia to Barstow area. Heck even trips to LA (180ish miles one way) can now be a problem as so many EA chargers are showing full. We look for EVGo and ChargePoint chargers as well but even those are starting to see traffic and are sometimes too much out of the way.

Owning a EV is no longer a bad thing even to hardcore ICE car guys like myself (and my wife). Unfortunately the charging infrastructure is not there and will probably get worse before they get better. Until we see huge improvements with the charging infrastructure many people will continue to stay away from EV's.

Main car, the MME, does the work, heavy lifting and c30,000 miles per year.

We have air source heat pump home heating and a heat pump clothes dryer.

Only wifey’s ICE burns fossil fuel in our household, though it does just 4 tanks of petrol per year so we’re probably better than almost all households in terms of how little fossil fuel we burn ?

You’re further in the direction I’m going. I’m hoping to switch out the gas burning items in my house for electric over the next 10 years. Furnace is only 10 years old and water heater is 2. Want heat pump for both and an induction stove. The one I’ll miss the most is my gas stove. We have a 17kw solar system with 30kWhr in batteries. I’ll be so happy ditching the gas bill and running almost completely on solar.

Once you get the induction stove, you might not miss the gas stove. We have a single "burner" induction stove (120V) and instant pot, we rarely use the gas cooktop. The induction is fast and gives precise control as opposed to a gas cooktop. It takes a bit to get used to the induction cooktop.
