No, there doesn’t need to be. There should be, but those are very different things.

There also need to be some at out of the way “destinations” like National Parks, or other rural destinations.
Level 2 won't manage. The interstate highways are conduits...even if there are chargers every 70 miles, it is not enough. Most people on those highways get off and drive another 100-50 miles to get where they are going....to see GrandPa. Once there they need to follow GrandPa to the local restaurant or local attraction because everyone doesn't fit in GrandPa's car. GrandPa doesn't have Level 2 at his house. Local driving will eat up the miles you gain with 120 volt charging in his driveway.

DCFC need to be at end destinations you mention and these too....museums, historic sites, casinos, beaches, ski resorts, court houses, amusement parks. What about a day trip....150 miles to pick up your child from University, 150 miles to return with 200 lbs of laundry and books. Universities & Colleges.

It's the same issue as with internet bandwidth or package delivery....the "last mile" is the most difficult and important part. It doesn't matter how fast data gets to the hub, the consumer is in her house waiting for her screen to load. The BEV consumer won't buy if he can't go to the beach and be able to drive back in one day if an emergency requires it. She won't drive the kids to Six Flags if there isn't a charger and a backup along the way.

Said with the perspective of someone who lives on an Island.
Need implies a necessity. There is no necessity for a DCFC at the end of Long Island. There should be, but we don’t have any right to recharge wherever we want just because we think that would be a convenient location. We also don’t have the right to expect there to be a gas station wherever we think it’s convenient for our ICE vehicles.

A charging station at the end of Long Island would be a good thing. But it’s not a need. Same with a Charging Station at South Point here.

To that end there is an EA DCFC being built at Key West, FL. ;)

Does anyone know what the cost of charging a Tesla to full charge and what the expected miles you would get.

Thanks

The problem with that is DCFC requires you to go out and unplug/move your car when it's done charging. If it's a high-power DCFC, that's probably <60 minutes. If you're halfway up the mountain on skis or in a courtroom, that's a problem.

50 kW would be a little better fit there but even that's usually a full charge in <90 minutes.

If it's a facility where customers are usually there for hours, L2 is a better fit. Doesn't cost nearly as much to provide (meaning they can put in more of them, and it's more likely to happen at all).

DCFC needs to be at places where people are only likely to be tied up away from the vehicle for less than an hour. That's where something like a restaurant or grocery shopping is usually a good fit.

Exactly. Tons of DCFC around would be wonderful for users, but it just ain't likely to happen. As always, the economics will be the main driver. It's probably 10x more expensive to do a DCFC than an L2. At a place were people are usually parked for hours, 20 L2 spread around is better than 2 L3.

Totally agree that the priority for DCFC should be road trip locations rather than city/residential locations. I just worry about the economics supporting it at only $0.31/kWh with these high costs. And how that may inhibit the expansion and competition that we're hoping for.
It really depends on the interest rate. With rates close to zero the cost of capital may be sufficiently low to justify the investment, While at the same time laying claim to the best locations that will become increasingly profitable as EVs become more popular and improved battery/charging technology reduces stop time. This is really an investment looking at future returns based on a competitive advantage purchased today.
