Not everyone knew the chain of events at the time. It surpassed expectations, showed it was a little stronger than it needed to be (at least for single launch, to be reusable needs increased durability), and met minimum mission success parameters. The bar for "success" was very low on this launch. Everything else was bonus content. If what you’re saying is true (it went 40 seconds longer than it should after getting the self destruct command), then the cheers and champagne popping are even WORSE!
REAL reactions wouldn’t be cursing under your breath, it would be out loud. And then when it finally exploded it would be a sigh of relief, not pretending like it was a “huge success.”
Watching that thing tumble was amazing. Anyone with even a hint of the forces involved that understands the physics would be too. Go visit a saturn V somewhere to get an understanding of just how much vehicle we're talking about.
Typically when rockets tumble it turns into this...
The starship atop the booster weighed ~3 million pounds. It took ~ 3 rotations occurring at mach 2 before it had structural failure.
