To be honest, that’s a decision only you can make based on your perceived risk and how much you want to try to do to mitigate it.

Personally, I’m more worried about Ford further reducing frunk volume than I am about my car catching fire. ?

They are extremely expensive and you don’t want to be standing around it trying to put a blanket on with flames and toxic smoke shooting out of it without any bunker gear or SCBA.

The proper course of action is to evacuate 100’ away and call 911 if an EV fire breaks out. Let the professionals handle it.

Agree....Mache-Lee.....

On that note "God for bid" if it ever caught fire....where does the fault lie? Insurance wise. Do Ford or any other EV Manufacture take responsibility. As these batteries should be fail safe.

Nothing is 100% failsafe (well, other than death and taxes). Your insurance or another parties insurance.

Having been a NYC fireman for 25 years I have to ask what do you think a blanket is going to do? By the time that you get it in place the car is history. There are no happy endings when a car catches fire.

nothing is 100% failsafe. I actually looked into the fireblanket thing, it takes special training and multiple people to deploy safely. I did verify that our fire department has these blankets and the firefighters receive this training.

I don't think anyone thinks the car will be salvageable after a fire, it's more to protect surrounding vehicles, people, structures IMHO.

We have some 100+ parking stalls in our underground garage, on three levels. The EV committee recommended we have blankets on each level, and training in their use is being scheduled. I was on the committee and agreed with the decision. But would not buy one just for myself if I lived in a house as opposed to a condo. Most likely the fire department would be deploying all of them, as well as their own.

Ladies and Gents,

Unless you have experience dealing with large fires, I would suggest you not try to deal with it in any way.
In my experience, most people panic when dealing with a fire , even small fires, and yell & scream while running around like a chicken with it's head cut off and are of no use.

I had never heard of an EV fire blanket, so I looked it up.
The demo video I saw was of an old hybrid that probably had less than 0.5 KWH's in the battery

Let me tell you something, unless your battery is at pretty much 0%, that blanket is not going to be of any use and the fire will be too intense for you to even get close enough to deploy the blanket.
And what is the process going to be, your car catches on fire, you have the fire blanket in the Frunk, What are you going to do, open the frunk while the cabin is full of smoke and flames and grab the blanket, take the time to open the package and unfurl the blanket, and then try to get some random stranger to help you deploy it. All the while the fire is getting worse.
Don't forget, you are in a panic, all the people on the scene are in a panic. Try explaining something that is simple to someone in a panic, they will not understand.
So now, you are trying to explain to some random stranger how the 2 of you together are going to each grab a corner and pull it across your car that is now burning at 3,000°F
Good Luck!

This is a cluster. As Mach-Lee stated, evacuate immediately and call 911. Untrained, ill-equipped, and improperly outfitted people should be nowhere near a fire of any type. Nor should you need to spend a dime on equipment that the fire department may, or may not, chose to utilize.

Does anyone know of any documented MME fires? All I've ever seen reported around here are Teslas, and it's still pretty rare. I don't know what the data is compared to ICE, as far as a comparable average. I'm guessing it's lower for EV's, but I don't know....

We were advised otherwise by the company doing the installation. There was also a political slant to this. We had to get approval of a majority of the unit owners, many of whom were anti-EVs. Unfortunately living in the real world accomodations need to be made. Had we followed your advice we likely would not have chargers.
