So i have been playing around. Is the order number only available from the window sticker? And if so, when is the window sticker generated? I entered my VIN and it said no window sticker available. am i just too early in the process?
Check if this works for you as well. If you're getting problems there, then you can't get your order information yet.

https://shop.ford.com/vehicleordertracking/

This project is putting a different skin on the same data received from Ford's order tracking. You just see more of the information than what the Ford website gives. To note, even my order now doesn't work as I received my car 3 months ago.

No. The order number is actually assigned as soon as your dealership puts your order in. So they have that information immediately and should be able to provide it. In my case, my dealership sent me a picture of my DORA (Dealer Order Receipt Acknowledgement) unsolicited, and that has the order number on it.

Order of events:

Order completed by dealer => order number assigned (four digits)
Build week assigned by factory => VIN number assigned (17 characters)
Day before build week (roughly) => Window sticker available

As of yesterday sometime, Ford‘s web service is no longer returning the last name associated with the order. It just comes back blank (””) now. I’m not sure if this is a bug or intentional.

At first it alarmed me that my name wasn’t there anymore. But I tried another VIN/order# combo that was shared on this forum and that one also doesn’t return a last name anymore either.

I would say not a bug, but a bug fix. I would not want my name returned in public facing data.

It‘s not public if you keep your order information private. ;)

It might be a “fix“, but if so it‘s a hasty one since the field is still in the JSON response, it’s just empty now.

All you need is the VIN. Many dealers post all incoming vehicles on their website, including special orders, complete with the VIN. I saw mine on the dealer site this weekend.

For the tracker in this thread and for Ford’s official order tracker (both of which use the same back end service), you need the order number that goes with the VIN.

For the tracker that is featured on this forum, you just need a VIN. But that one does not provide any customer information.

Up until today showed the customer name with just the VIN required.

Since it pulls the info from Ford it no longer shows the name.

Fair enough. I don’t use that one because it doesn’t work with my VIN. Although I have experimented with it using other VINs that can be found on this forum, it has been awhile so I forgot that it displayed the customer name. Certainly displaying any PII with a VIN lookup alone is a security issue. That’s not just a bug, it’s a design flaw exposing the company to significant liability. It’s no surprise they have plugged that hole.

Requiring a matching VIN / Order# pair to see customer information is less of a concern since it’s not something that can be looked up or easily guessed. But I don’t disagree that even that is probably not the best engineering choice. In fact, the more natural and obvious design would simply require one to create and log into a ford.com account to see order information. Eventually, that’s probably what will happen.

Had a good run, but Ford changed the API enough where the VIN Details Tool I created is now inoperable.

I created the tool as a way to surface data sent to your browser but not displayed properly. Ford changed their systems and removed the data that was once retrievable. There's nothing I can do about that. I'll make notes of this on the site at some point soon.

I don't know about the Find Your VIN tool. It may still work, but I have no way of confirming as I already have my Mach-E as of April 2021. I don't know if it's even needed now?

That said, the repo for the code is still up here. I'll entertain Pull Requests there's a need and a way to get the data. Though to be honest, the real fix is Ford improving the customer journey, but I digress

https://github.com/TheSeg/mache-vin-finder

I created the tool almost a year ago (Dec 13, 2020) as I was already doing the work and figured I'd share the research. Very low effort on my part as I knew the day would come when the too becomes obsolete. I purposely didn't put tracking on the site, so all the thanks and comments from the forum were wonderful to read. I'm glad the tool was helpful to many.

For what it's worth @TheSeg , the Find Your VIN tool was able to give me my VIN, and I just got my production date today.
