Has anybody noticed that Ford's stock price has gone up significantly over the last couple of days? Could it be the excitement over the Mach E?

FORD CHINA POSTS LARGEST YEAR-OVER-YEAR SALES INCREASE SINCE 2016; THIRD QUARTER SALES GREW 25.4 PERCENT
OCT 15, 2020 | SHANGHAI
  • Total of 164,352 vehicles were sold in the third quarter, representing a 25.4 percent growth year-over-year and a 3.6 percent increase compared to second quarter 2020
  • Ford, Lincoln and JMC brand vehicles saw double-digit year-over-year growth
  • Favorable product mix, enhanced by newly launched vehicles, sustained strong growth as Chinese consumer demand continued to increase
SHANGHAI, Oct. 16, 2020 – Ford and its joint ventures, Changan Ford, JMC and Ford Lio-Ho, sold 164,352 vehicles in Greater China in the third quarter. Strong sales momentum contributed to 25.4 percent year-over-year growth – the largest since fourth quarter 2016 – and a 3.6 percent increase quarter-to-quarter. Sales of Ford, Lincoln and JMC brand vehicles achieved year-over-year growth of 12.5 percent, 64.8 percent and 38.3 percent, respectively.

“Ford is strengthening its sales momentum in China by building on growing consumer preference for our iconic brand and favorable product mix of luxury and near-premium utility vehicles,” said Anning Chen, president and CEO of Ford China. “Our localization strategy to produce in China world-class Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including the newly launched Ford Explorer, Lincoln Corsair and Lincoln Navigator, has further enhanced our competitiveness in delivering the best products and services that Chinese consumers are looking for.”

Third quarter highlights
  • Ford brand vehicle sales in Greater China totaled 87,131 units, up 12.5 percent year-over-year:
    • Ford brand SUVs sold 38,749 units in the Mainland China market, an increase of 72.2 percent year-over-year and 34.8 percent over the second quarter
    • Strong demand for commercial vehicles in the Mainland China market drove Ford Transit sales of 12,463 units, an increase of more than 30 percent year-over-year.
    • Ford Lio-Ho sold 9,128 vehicles in the Taiwan market, up 60.7 percent year-over-year, and achieved its best quarterly sales result in 13 years. Momentum was driven by strong demand for Ford Focus and the all-new Ford Kuga, which sold 4,166 and 4,095 units, respectively.
  • Lincoln brand luxury vehicle sales delivered best-ever quarterly results in China with 19,143 units sold, up 64.8 percent year-over-year. Sales of Lincoln Corsair reached 11,041 units in the third quarter and set a new quarterly record for individual Lincoln nameplates in China.
  • JMC brand vehicle sales exceeded 58,000 units, an increase of 38.3 percent year-over-year, reflecting continued strong demand for light trucks, commercial vans and pickups.
Ford China’s continued acceleration of new product launches and localization strategy contributed to its sales momentum in the third quarter. The all-new Mustang Mach-E, which made its China debut at Auto China 2020, will be available locally next year as Ford expands its product portfolio with electrified vehicle offerings. The company is focused on strengthening its growth momentum by delivering its “Best of Ford, Best of China” commitment and leveraging its newly introduced Pioneering Innovation brand spirit and next-generation design language to offer vehicles tailored to the needs of Chinese consumers.

Ford is very hot right now. The navigator, escape, explorer, are selling very well. The navigator is so hot in china ford is making over 85,000 profit off of each one sent.
The f series well can't make them fast enough. Kentucky truck plant is running 3 shifts 6 days a week no stop in sight.
The new edge will be built in canda and be an EV date to be determined.

Then you have the bronco and mache launch killing it.
ranger sold double what was expected.
transit van is being big overseas now.
Mustang sales are leveled out but that is in the plans to change soon.

You are starting to see the fruit of Ford's labor over the last few years with 11 billion spent in electrification, new and exciting model refreshes, and new models.

You have to spend money to make money even taking steps back to grow (trimming the fat). Ford will reap the rewards over the next 5 years. Their poor performance over the previous 3-4 years has been because of their transition which they're doing quicker than all other major Automakers. I'd say VW is probably next in line.

I think with Technology and over the air updates all auto manufactures will become more profitable with electronic delivery of services via pay ware.

I.E. every car built comes with auto wipers, but you bought it from the dealer without that software unlocked for a cheaper price. You can order on your car's infotainment to unlock the "tech package" for $1,000 OTA for example.

If, let's say, rain sensing wipers required a subscription of any kind, I don't think I'd pay for it.

For one, it barely ever rains here and turning wipers on and off is quick and painless on most cars.

Next, I've paid once for the hardware and software (at time of activation and/or at initial purchase). I have no expectation of ongoing updates to the rain sensing capability and it requires no ongoing servicing from the manufacturer or other service providers. So being asked for ongoing payments would be pure profit to the seller with nothing in exchange for me.

Isn't Mercedes doing something like this now with heated seats? Selling them as a subscription model seems like ridiculous abuse of their customers, unless in exchange they are warrantied to work every time you call for heat. But even if that's the case, are their seat heaters so unreliable that I need to prepay to have them serviced? I just don't get it.

I was using that as an example, but no it would be merely software related in my opinion. I don’t see selling hardware that way since your car is built with it in it and cost more, but software requires continual development (I.e. Fords autonomous driving)

Ford blows away earnings expectations as consumers buy up trucks during pandemic

Ford Motor blew away Wall Street expectations as well as the company’s forecasted earnings for the third quarter on stronger-than-expected demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

Here’s how Ford performed versus what Wall Street expected, based on average analysts’ estimates compiled by Refinitive.

  • Adjusted EPS: 65 cents vs 19 cents expected, according to Refinitiv
  • Automotive revenue: $34.71 billion vs $33.51 billion expected, according to Refinitiv
Former Ford CFO Tim Stone, who left the company earlier this month, told investors in July that the automaker expected earnings on an adjusted pretax basis of between $500 million and $1.5 billion during the third quarter. That would be down from $1.8 billion in the third quarter of 2019.

Stone said the decline reflects the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, lower profit from Ford Credit, and weaker global demand for new vehicles, parts and services.

Analysts and investors are watching to see if Ford will be able to outperform its previous projections as it did during the second quarter after consumer demand in the U.S. was stronger than anticipated, especially for trucks such as the Ford F-150.

Wall Street also is watching for any additional business changes by Ford CEO Jim Farley, who succeeded Jim Hackett effective Oct. 1, and any updates on the company paying off its increased debt due to the pandemic.

In July, Ford repaid $7.7 billion of an outstanding $15.4 billion on its revolving credit facilities, and also extended $4.8 billion of its three-year revolving credit lines.

Ford’s shares remain down by 17% so far this year, despite an almost 15% increase in the stock price in October.
