Google maps and CarPlay

I like to plan my long trips on my laptop using Google Maps. I then found it difficult to replicate that route in the car using Google Maps via CarPlay. Then I realised I could send the map from my laptop to my iPhone. Fantastic! However when I tried CarPlay would not work. When I "killed" off Google Maps on the iPhone CarPlay worked but Google maps no longer had my planned route. Anyone know a work around or has succeeded in preplanning a route on a laptop and then sending it to an iPhone and using it via CarPlay?

Yes. I planned a route on my computer. I had Google text the route to my phone. Start the car and connect via CarPlay. I click on the link in the text on my phone, it opens Google Maps on the phone, I lock the phone (leaving google maps open) place the phone on the charging pad. CarPlay displays Google Maps on the car screen with my route. Away I go.

CarPlay is a projection of your phone, leave Google maps open with your route.

On android at least, with google maps being my default navigation app, If my phone is connected to the car using AndroidAuto, if I were to tap an address or link in a text for google maps, it won't do anything on the phone, but it will set my destination on AndroidAuto screen automatically.
