Hey all,

Okay, so I bought a 21 GTPE about a month ago. Software is severely out of date, and modules probably so behind that they won’t ever get OTA. All of this I expect and can kind of tolerate.

However, this thing charges on DCFC like a wounded dog. Best peak I have gotten was 72 kw on a charger rated 200 kw. My previous 21 Select AWD didn’t charge this poorly as far as I recall.

Not only that, I have had about a 70 percent DCFC charge initiation failure rate. EA, EVGo, BTCPower, Nissan, ABB. Ambient temps from mid 40 to low 50s for these sessions. Typically started pretty deep in the pack (20-30 percent). I just had a session with an EVgo 50 kw charger where I rolled up at 22 percent, plugged in, got 26 minutes of charging at 44 kw, and then it went into an out of order state. This has never happened in my previous MME.

On my Select AWD, I would at least get a peak of 90-100 kw for some duration. This car can’t even seem to break 75 kw.

I recently charged at a 350 kw EA charger, 24 percent SOC, it ramped up to 67 kw, and nothing more. This is crazy, 48 degrees.

So, my question: anyone else experience this? Might running manual software updates help this? Or am I hosed and this is what I should expect?

You could ask someone to look into what the current status is of your modules. If they are way out of date then you may have to go to a dealer and pay to have them updated. That being said I have no idea if that could be the issue with your apparent DCFC issues.

@AKgrampy I have gotten someone to look into the state of my software, it’s bad. For the cost of having a dealer do “some” updates, I could get an FDRS rig and do it myself for way cheaper.

Do you know if your vehicle has the update related to the charging curve improvements?

Update the software. If that doesn't work take it to the dealer as something isn't working right. You can also try a 12v reset by removing the neg 12v cable for a minute.

Try preconditioning before leaving your house so the battery is warmer and see what happens then. Turn the heat off while charging.

Rather certain that the CSP 21P22 wasn’t applied. The car was being shipped from Illinois to California right around the time the CSP was around. I think I’m stuck without running updates myself.

I think that update really only improved things above the 80% SOC where charging used to drop drastically but maybe it also improved the low end too.

I'll tell you a trick, see what modules are outdated, pick like 3-4 critical ones, go to the dealer and tell them you are having issues with the systems related to those modules, don't mention updates, they will troubleshoot and not really find anything but since you mentioned those systems, they will go and update those modules.

example:
My AC isn't working properly ( pending AC module update )
My wireless charger isn't working ( pending charger update ).

I know it's painful and annoying, but unfortunately, that's how Ford does it, those cars will be outdated before the warranty expires.

I was going to suggest this exact thing. I would also start with your main concern about the slow charging. They may use that concern as a reason to apply updates under warranty rather than making you pay for them.

If you run into problems getting them to o this under warranty you may want to reach out to the BEV team and ask if they can help getting you these updates from the local dealer.

If a car isn't getting OTA updates, the dealer is supposed to unstick it. They should be able to see when the last OTA update was applied, and under warranty apply whatever updates it needs to get the OTA process going.

This is great, I’ve reached out to my dealership’s service department, but since they will likely see this as non-critical on their end, it might be a month or more to even get them to look at it, and I don’t blame them. I have been meaning to get knowledgeable about FDRS anyway.

There are several FDRS updaters in the Bay Area that may be able to help you if you didn't want to buy the equipment yourself.

Ford does pay for some but not for all. It depends if it is a service bulletin or something like that or obviously a recall.

My dealer says they can squeeze me in on the 28th, so quicker than I expected. I ordered the equipment to do this myself, don’t know if I will or won’t based off of timing.
