Where is this argument about bus bars being undersized coming from? It seems like conjecture to me.

Empirically, the bus bars on the Mach E look close in size to the bus bars on other 400v vehicles, like the F150 Lightning and Rivian. After a couple minutes on google, it looks like Connor Manufacturing makes bus bars for most of the industry, including Ford.

I too am surprised there is no aftermarket interest, is this an indication that there is no way to improve or it would be too costly?

I’m guessing it’s just a lack of pioneers.

That and it’s a lot more complicated than tuning an ICE.

ICE tune- download the tables (look like a spreadsheet), change the values, upload the new tables.

BEV- somehow hack into the software, adjust values, but do so that it’ll still allow for OTA updates.

I’m betting the last part is the hardest.

Only Tesla “tune” I’ve seen was for the regular dual motor (non performance) 3 and Y.

They just copied the $2,000 tune that Tesla offers and did it for cheaper.

Not exactly a real aftermarket tune.

So how will they keep an OTA update from rewriting any tune though?

If we can get in, the actual “tune” should be absurdly easy.

Change a few parameters (like hp limit and 5 second limit) and you’re done. Although fine tuning all the parameters for the 5 sec limit may be a bit more complicated. I’m guessing there are tables of multiple limiters based on speed, temp, discharge rate etc. but even so, the same tune Parameters would work on all GTs.

When I used HPtuners on my 02 Trans Am, it was a painstakingly long process. Log, tune, log, tune. It got easier when they started using some “smoothing” functions for the tables, but still. I had over 100 tunes by the time I was done. Part of that was having to retune every time I did a new mod. But all the timing and fuel trim tables…… we’re finicky. Especially part throttle tuning for my 6 speed. Throw in an automatic and even more stuff to mess with.

So much good stuff in this post.

Unlikely that engineers settled on the horsepower limit of my last car (Chevy SS). It came with a 415hp version of the LS3. Why 415 and not the 436 hp version that the Corvettes get? Likely a marketing decision.

That was fine though, after a simple tune I had 450 hp. The same tune gets the Corvette……. 450 hp.

I really hope the aftermarket tuners crack the code. Eventually they’ll have to or go out of business.
Ahem. ? Correction, the SS Sedan had the same actual output of 425-430HP (436 with bi-modal exhaust) as the contemporary Vette and Camaro SS. Holden/Chevrolet downrated it slightly to account for the silly intake silencer but many dyno runs showed that the output was still the same 425-430 crankshaft HP. They were being conservative.

Same as the Camaro/Firebird LS-1 back in ‘98, rated at 305-320hp vs. 345 for the Vette. Yet, all contemporary dynos showed they all made the same 280-290 rear wheel HP. I know all 4 of mine did before they got modded.

Maybe. Unless you’re running vehicles on the same Dyno, same day, it’s hard to compare numbers. Some dynos are…… a bit more gracious with their numbers.

My stock dyno showed it was about right. And after the tune- picked up 3/10 in the 1/4 mile. The SS definitely picked up 30+ hp on the Dyno from a tune, while the Corvettes only net around 15. Even the tuning companies claim that and they DO run the same vehicles same day on the Dyno before and after the tune.

Now the LS1 was for sure under rated. I had an 02 Trans Am as well.

Edit: maybe it’s closer than I thought. Just checked with the tuner I had (Livernois) and they claim 27 hp gain for the SS and 21 hp gain for the Corvette.

Yep, I spoke at length with the Livernois guys, they said all the LS3 dynos they’ve done show outputs to be essentially identical. And they do lots of OEM dyno related work for GM/Ford/Stellantis at their shop. Their gains are pretty spot on too, I got 3-4mph gain in the 1/4 from tune/CAI which they quote at 37hp together. Also, got another 2-3 from LT headers which is in line with their estimates.

Has anyone been able to figure out what the difference in ECU values for the GT and GTPE are for the torque?
