Hello everyone!! My name is Tony. My wife and I test drove a Mach E today at Greico Ford in Delray Beach Fl. this morning. We liked the car, but I have some questions because the salesman could not answer any of them! He didn't even know which trim level the car we drove was. I was wondering how long it takes to charge on level 1 or level 2 charging? We would be interested in the car with the smallest battery which I think gets about 210 miles on a charge? We are snowbirds so we would be making one trip a year in the fall from NY to FL and then back in the spring. Is fast charging readily available for the trip from NY to FL on Rt. 95? We take 2 days to make the trip now, and I realize we may need an extra day to do it with the Mach E. Thanks in advance for the info, and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome! There is a WEALTH of information on this forum that you can find by searching for posts from other people (search bar at the top right).

In the meantime - some info - a roadtrip like that would be shorter with a longer-range Mach-E. Keep in mind that the extended range battery options will charge at a faster rate at Fast Chargers on the road. (at home, they all charge at the same rate).

If you have pictures of the car you test drive, we can identify which model it was. The badging on the side and the trim pieces give it away.

yea, fast charging can be a beautiful thing, or extremely painful (as when it doesn't work). At 40+ minutes per stop, I too would urge you to consider an "x" model with the larger battery (with faster charging). If you don't need the AWD ("4") performance, a RWD model has even more range, another 30 miles over the AWD model.

Level 1 would add about 3 miles of range per hour. Level 2 will add anywhere from 20 to 28 miles of range per hour of charging - it depends on if it is using 40 amp or 48 amp charging.

As for your long trip, try punching it in to https://abetterrouteplanner.com and see what it says. You can even tell it what EV you have and it will plan accordingly with charging stops and charging times.

You could take the auto train from DC suburbs to Orlando. Significantly reduce charging. We took it on our 15K mile trip around the USA because we wanted a break from driving

It is one hell of a learning curve to move from gas power to electric. Especially in not considering everything in terms of miles per gallon and instead getting into an efficiency mindset. I can charge pretty quickly up here in Northern NY, but depending on the temperature I may be adding 25 miles for each hour of charging, or only 15.
But I do love this car. Driving my wife’s to work today as she didn’t need it. Picking up one for myself tomorrow.

Be careful of dealers that have ADM fees on top of MSRP.

First let me say that driving electric is different than what you're used to, but you don't have to spend a huge amount of time becoming an "expert" to get the Mach E and drive it around successfully. Ford intentionally engineered it to be as familiar as possible, and added enough AI so that the car will help ensure you don't get stuck somewhere; it automatically adds in charging stops to routes in the NAV and will also direct you to the nearest charger if you're running low on juice without using the NAV. For charging you can get away with a regular 110 outlet but it does charge very slowly and isn't really practical for most people. The good news is that you can have standard 240V outlet (called a NEMA 14-50) put in your garage by any electrician and use the included Ford charger. While not strictly necessary for added convenience/reliability there are aftermarket chargers that are more durable and have added features.

Excellent advice about ABRP -it comes in really handy for determining charging stops and efficient routes to a destination. It is pretty good at optimizing your charging stops, but also gives you the flexibility to override things like departure times and charge levels so you can tweak the plan. However, you do also need to learn some about the different models to decide what's best for you. The key is that the all wheel drive gets about 10% less range than the rear wheel drive, and the extended range goes about 30% further than the standard range battery. As mentioned the extended range battery charges faster than the standard range, but if you are only planning 2 long drives a year I don't think that should be your primary consideration in your choice. Instead I would suggest basing your purchase on convenience in your typical drives. That is, look at your 95% use case of distance and purchase on that: if 95% of your driving is 100 miles or less, there is probably no need to get the extended range battery.

Since electric cars are so much more efficient, you notice things that affect that efficiency much more - such as cold weather, which can decrease your range by as much as 35%. There are 2 reasons for this: the chemistry of the batteries is affected by the cold, and without an internal combustion engine there isn't a lot of waste heat that can be used to warm the cabin.

I am still learning. I am finding significant range reduction when driving in the rain. My drives typically run 3.1 - 3.5 m/kWh. 50 miles in a cold rain Wednesday came in at 2.7. Small sample size and there could be other variables, but the rain seemed to be the main factor.
