I have a 2023 MME Premium and an iPhone15 with iOS18 running. This problem has existed for most of the last year or so (and earlier iOS version(s))

CarPlay Audio:
When starting the car, CarPlay connects, but at random times, the audio will be muted, as if some kind of handoff to the car audio system failed. I used to reboot the phone, but I read somewhere that simply going to the iPhone settings-> CarPlay-> Mach E and turning it OFF and back ON fixes the problem - the audio returns. It works. But it's a little hard to do when driving of course! Everything else looks normal. Just no sound from phone or car.

Has anyone experienced this? I was hoping that iOS18 would fix it, but no luck. Perhaps I should delete the car from the the CarPlay Settings and add it back. There are times when it doesn't happen for many starts and then other times where it happens every few starts. Any advice? Thanks.

I usually restart the middle screen (hold vol down + next button on steering wheel) when this happens and that works 90% of the time without a phone restart needed.

This has been happening to me way more often recently as well. Several times a week. Sometimes when rebooting doesn’t work, at a red light I have to shut off the car, open and close the door, then restart the car to get the audio back.

I don’t have this issue in my Expedition.

I feel it happens most often when I put my car into reverse before CarPlay fully loads and starts. But I have not thoroughly tested that theory.
interesting... I'll have to pay attention to this scenario and see if that is when my sound doesn't work. It isn't that often so something like this makes some sense to me.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions! Will give them a try...
I thought it was CarPlay since resetting it fixed the problem. But with the new version in iOS18 (nice shared home screen) it still occurred. So, it is looking more like some bug in Ford's software that gets triggered by some sequence of events.

Yes; it happens to me and that's my fix as well. I'm not aware of a permanent fix.

Oddly, today I noticed the same issue. I rebooted Sync, didn’t work. I did my shut down / restart sequence, didn’t work. Then I discovered it was the Sirius XM station I was listening to via my phone and Car Play that was the issue. The song was playing because I could see the timer progressing but no sound. I changed stations on the app and I got sound. I went back to the previous station and it too had sound. ?‍♂

When listening to Apple Music, usually just rebooting Sync does the trick.

Switching from “soundless” car play to xm and back to car play normally seems to bring the sound back to CarPlay for me. It’s a variation on your theme of changing xm channels. I haven’t paid enough attention to observe a pattern.

Yep!

happens to me, usually at the most inconvenient time.

Think it happens when I get in, start car, stop it because I remember something I needed, get out, don’t lock car, return to it and restart to go.

Seems to confuse the IT.

Must be programmed by an 8 year old ?

I have the same (random) issue; happened just today in fact. I am going to observe and see if it is somehow related to putting the car into reverse before the phone fully syncs to the car. Other than that, I can’t think of any trigger for what is an annoying bug.

I am not sure this is solely a Ford problem. My last car had wireless carplay and it did it there as well. It seems to happen more when it is a short stop (less than 5 minutes), the quick disconnect and reconnect seems to throw something off.

I have also noticed PaaK acting up if I used apple pay (tap to pay) with the phone, I need to make sure to open the Ford app up or it won't connect.

Happens to me too. I just go into the phone in settings on the car and turn the CarPlay off and then back on again and it always comes back.
This is my fix too.
