The L was a carryover from the Escape/Bronco/Maverick line which use the same shifter knob (obviously the Mach-E doesn’t actually have a low gear). Rather than design a totally new part, they just decided to use the existing knob they had and added some regen so the L button wasn’t totally non-functional. Otherwise, it’s kind of pointless to have L on an EV that has a blended brake pedal and 1 pedal drive. If you want a lot of lift-off regen, you would just use 1PD.
I use 1PD all the time, but regen in Whisper is less than I want, so I use Low to get that. This would be a non-issue if we could adjust ride, throttle mapping, and regen separately.

I would love to be able to combine the steering feel of Unbridled with the regen level of Engaged, perhaps a future version of the Mach-E will have some custom mode.

We have a new 2024 MME GT. We like Unbridled and max motor braking. Yes, one pedal driving has been selected. Does pushing the L button actually make the one pedal driving stronger?(we hope!!!) haven't been able to tell so far...

Sadly, local dealers are not well educated on these cars...

No, L does not increase regenerative braking when in Unbridled. 🤔🐩

I used it a few times going down steep grades like I used to in ICE cars. Feels the same.

L = the same level of regen as Unbridle mode
So from what you guys are saying and what I read in the manual, LO is really for driving downhill in Whisper or Engage for those who don't want to use one-pedal driving. It works like a traditional automatic transmission's LO.

If you like one pedal driving, regardless of mode, it will increase the level of one pedal braking to the same level as it is in Unbridled.

But if you are driving Unbridled with one-pedal selected, selecting LO will make no difference in performance.

Does that sound right, guys?

Selecting L when in unbridle, regardless of 1P, does nothing.
Unbridle has the same level of regen as L in other modes.
I for one don’t know why the car has whisper or engage modes. 🤷‍♂️

Kinda judgey. If you don't care about the feature, don't want to use it, and don't bother learning about it...that all seems reasonable and a personal choice. My iPhone probably has a ton of features I could care less about.
Look, @RickMachE berating people for not reading the manual is a time honored forum tradition here, along with winter posts about lost range, and people asking where the kick to open liftgate or auto park features are.

To be fair, I felt the same way about anyone that hadn’t read Lord Of The Rings when I was 13.

I started driving in Engage occasionally when I got tired of the car defaulting back to it every other day. Was curious to see if it ever randomly switched to Unbridle- it doesn’t.

You already know this, but low serves a completely different purpose than 1PD.

People like options and the ability to adjust the drive modes to our liking.

I still think we need even MORE customization not less! Allow us to adjust steering feel, regen and suspension stiffness independently of each other and in both 1PD and 2PD!

Low did exactly what it should have- mirror and ICE vehicle in low. Great for coasting down mountains in 2PD or for people who like 2PD and whisper suspension setting but lots of regen.

Just went from 22 GTPE to 25 GTPU And I noticed the L missing right away because I used to drive in whisper and use the L for added regen when needed. It does feel like they recalibrated to drive modes, and now I use unbridled and it seems to give me the perfect amount of regen whereas before I didn't like it. So it is missing, it is annoying not to have it on demand, but after a week I have a really noticed it anymore and I'm driving in unbridled more.

I should add I do like that they did get rid of things ring shifter, it was never a great piece of design a faceplate with the letters would pop up a little bit making it hard to click and we have to be pushed down the reset back into the hole. It really bothered me and I try to get it fixed and of course it wouldn't pop up for the service center, but then popped up a few days later.

But Unbridled Extended has virtually no regen. Much better when sliding through a turn.
