This will be my second. First was a Toyota Prius in 2001. I like being an early adopter I guess

First full EV but second order. First order was a 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid, which I wanted fully loaded, but the dealer didn't order that way for the lot ("nobody ever wants the navigation or XM Radio in a Civic").

That one arrived faster than the Mach-E ?.

This is my second special order, first was a 2012 Smart For Two. My wife saw it on a TV commercial and said I want it! well needed to keep her happy so a $100 deposit and thirteen months later the over priced go kart arrived. Fortunately it served her well for 130,000 miles when she gave it to our daughter to use at college. It was finally traded it to CarMax with 275k miles and it was probably still good for another 275k!

This is my first online car buying experience and generally speaking IMO it is better than going to a dealership to buy a car. Online buying allows you to order the car and accessories you want without being pressured to buy what is on the lot.

I am thinking that all the confusion and poor communication was hidden by the dealership. They spec'd and ordered the cars and we got to pick from what eventually showed up on their lots.

Ford's crappy communication was exposed once they started selling online.

My current experience with online purchasing clearly exposed dealerships as an unnecessary third party that creates complexity and frustration.

When you order your car online from Ford they communicate directly to you but do a terrible job of it. They do not provide up to date tracking of your vehicle to you or the dealer. Ford should have a contact that is able to tell you exactly where your car is and when it is expected at the next point in it’s journey.

Our MME has been missing now for over 3 weeks since being notified that shipping was completed and to make payment. Dealership has only caused confusion and amplified the frustration because they are not privy to anymore information from Ford than the customer, which isn’t much.

Porsche Boxster S
Porsche Carrera

I should have been more clear. I am specifically talking about Ford’s online ordering. In this scenario Ford’s dealers are useless. Ford deals with the customer directly through their internet site, no dealer involvement other than the customer choosing which dealer to have the car delivered to.

For some insane reason there is a huge disconnect between Ford and the outside world (especially the customer and the dealer) during shipping.

The dealer currently confirms my car is in Kansas City (salesman) and simultaneously that it is Salt Lake City (general manager) while Ford maintains that it is in Nampa ID ready for pickup and payment. This has been going on for over 3 weeks with no end in site.

Ford’s “online ordering process” really isn’t. It’s actually an online configuration process where once it’s configured the configuration is then sent to a dealer. The dealer then accepts the order and Ford then makes the car for the dealer. This is because of the laws around dealerships and manufacturers. ??

I sent my order through a dealer an hour and a half from me because I hate the one closest to my office and the one closest to home was not EV-certified when I placed my reservation (I am not a big fan of the ownership of this one either). If I have to do any warranty or recall work, I guess I have to go to a dealer somewhere in between to drive an hour and a half. ??‍♂?

You are correct and that is the rub, that the order is forced through a dealership. The problem is that Ford does not provide the dealership with more information than the customer. The dealership is third party and not part of Ford. If the dealer were cut out then my car would still be missing but I would not have the useless and powerless dealer wedged in the middle providing conflicting information while claiming they have done all they can and that I should sit and wait.

I ordered a T&C minivan years ago. The dealer played games when it was time to pick it up and I almost didn’t buy it. They backed down when I retrieved my original paperwork. I would have walked away.

This is my second special order vehicle. My first was a 1985 Honda CRX-hf that got 50 mpg. Yes 50 mpg (I think it was around 59 hoursepower) - look it up. And I paid ADM. it listed for around $6,400 new - I think I paid around $7,600 because it was so popular.

My last special order car was a 2002 bmw 330i. 6 speed black with dark tan interior. It is one of my favorites. I’m enjoying my Alfa that I purchased almost 3 years ago. I think I will keep that once I get delivery on my Mach E

I always bought cars off the dealers lot. The Mach E order process and delays were excruciatingly painful but I have nothing to compare against. This was a first time for me.
Ironically, the Mach E was the first off-the-lot car I've purchased since 1971. Every car between then and now was factory ordered.

I forgot that my ‘02 Honda CR-V took 4 months because the dealer lied about availability and it was built in Japan. I still own the CR-V and ‘02 was its 1st model year. I just switched to classic car license plates.
