The local dealership (Subaru!) has a lovely 2021 Grabber Blue GT that was I eyeballing and they just dropped the price on it. It's got 25k on it, which doesn't bother me because it looks practically new. But what I noticed that has me a bit nervous is the photo that they posted:

Ford Mustang Mach-E Is this a red flag? 1682559432436

If this is figuring that with battery at 100% it only has a 218 mile range, is this a red flag that the battery is deteriorating quickly? I know it was originally from Colorado, so it has been through a couple winters there and I'm in ND, which is obviously cold (although I would keep it plugged in in a heated garage at home and plugged in outside at work). How often does it recalculate this figure based on driving? Possibly if it was just getting test driven regularly maybe it was getting driven hard? I know when I test drove it, it was not at 100%, but the GOM went down about 30 miles for the 15 miles I drove it. It was probably around 25-30*F when I tested it but it had been charging inside. If we are supposed to generally only charge to 80%, that would mean that the car has a typical range of about 175 miles.

I know that we don't know the driving history of this calculation and we don't know the temp, etc etc etc....but I am just wondering if seeing this type of range is "normal" or common or if should be suspect and verify that it does not look like that when I check it in person again. What kind of range do common people see when charged to 100%?

Thanks!

I’d be willing to bet that some people have been having fun it so the computer is calculating what kind of range it’s been getting. Obviously, the faster you drive, the less range you’ll have. If you drive reasonably, I suspect you’ll get closer to the epa estimate.

I don’t know where you are in ND, but if it’s cold now that will definitely have a significant impact on range, even of the car was charged indoors. So in addition to people doing Bullit test drives, that could impact the range until the weather gets warmer. Take a look at the trip meter. If you’re lucky it won’t have been reset recently and it will give you an idea of the efficiency of the car which should help explain of the issue is the battery (limited capacity), or driving history (temperature and style/speed/acceleration).

Ok, so the GOM resets with the trip odometer? Sweet....that should make it easier to get a more "real" number....thanks!

That GOM is based on previous driving habits. Mine fluctuates up and down all the time depending how spirited I feel like driving that week. Also temps have a lot to do with it. I wouldn't fret too much about it.

The battery is cold so that's why the jail bars are there. Go check out the car and turn on preconditioning for 2x daily. Boom. No more GT jail bars.

I set my GT battery to automatically precondition every 12 hrs (no cabin heat) because I hate the temp jailbars due to cold Minnesota weather.

Car is probably fine

Would checking the state of health with a OBD scanner for the HVB help determine any degradation of the battery?

Exactly.

I’m counting around 15 grey bars in the power meter in that picture.

It was seriously cold when that picture was taken, thus the lower range.

What is intriguing to me is the 50% of prison bars.

Define seriously cold.
It only gets down to low 30s, high 20s here in Seattle. I don’t precondition, and have never seen more than 2-3 bars.
