You're far more charitable when it comes to dealers than I am. There's no reason they should not have known it was FCTP.
My guess is they "knew" as in "somebody there was aware". But the particular sales guy who dealt with him did not -- and probably said "oh look at this, apparently it says here that we have that exact car on order already, and it doesn't look spoken for. I guess you can have that!"

So I was a little late to this party and finally decided on MME in November 2020.
I had intended to place an order however the dealership said "we already have that exact car ordered for stock and it should be here in December, pay $500 deposit and its yours"
Cue the wait...
The car arrived on 3/11, and I had hoped to pick it up 3/13. Sorry we cant have it ready for 3/13.
Today (3/15) the dealership is saying Ford is requiring them to place the vehicle they have had my deposit on since November into FCTP.
Some other inventory is available but nothing that I want, to use the state rebate program the vehicle has to be below $51,100 so the extended range does not work and I do not want a select.

does anyone know if the dealer or Ford can reassign a different vehicle as the demo unit?

would contacting a Ford Rep. help me at all? Does anyone have suggestion on who to contact?
Go on Autotrader.com and look for your Mustang within 500 miles. Call all the listings and hardball about price and delivery should not be over $400. I got my exact build and the dealer that was 251 miles away honored xplan. Found the car on a Monday night and took delivery Wednesday.

If you really have this agreement in writing - as in, you can document that the dealer took your deposit in exchange for this specific car - then I would expect Ford can help you if you pester them. Twitter is your best method - the public visibility of the complaint will get their attention far more than a call to customer service.

You could also find the MME you want if you cast a big enough net, but limiting yourself to Maine for the tax incentive will make that much less likely.

Exactly. I was in a similar situation a month ago but the dealer realized within hours they had made a mistake and that was the end of it. Anyone can get sloppy from time to time, but not knowing for months? I highly doubt it.

I don't think Ford will do anything if you only put down a deposit. The FCTP is pretty strict. They did make an exception for one customer who bought a Bronco or something and then the dealer tried to get it back, but it went public in the media and the customer had actually bought it, not just a deposit, and taken it home. I suspect all they will do if you put down a deposit is refund your money. If you had actually signed all the paperwork and the dealership signed the title paperwork over to you, you'd have a lot more leverage (basically all of it)

Wonder if the dealer provided a VIN at the time of deposit. I can see a "random sales guy" not knowing at a glance that the car was destined for FCTP, but I would think that other folks who should know better were involved if a deposit was taken.

It strains credulity if they had the VIN and either did not know it was an FCTP car or that Ford "changed it at the last minute". Fishy, IMO. Do they have another FCTP car, or is this the only one?

Also, if this was genuine and they felt bad about it, wouldn't they be doing everything possible to find you a replacement? They are content with "tough break, Bud?"

I had the VIN when the deposit was taken. And yeah, they don’t seem to care

I was in a similar situation, dealer group with two locations had two Premiums on the way and the color I really wanted was one of them. Sales guy was trying to get me to sign a deal and when he went back to start writing it up the sales manager knew right away it was FCTP. I find it really hard to believe a sales manager wouldn't have known the car wasn't available. This dealer couldn't even start the process because of how it was marked in inventory
