One of the common issues I faced with CarPlay was the inability to connect wirelessly to SYNC. I always had to plug the Apple USB connector to get CarPlay to work.

Finally, I figured it out:
1. Connect your iPhone to SYNC via Bluetooth.
2. Go to the wireless network drop down screen on SYNC and connect your iPhone WiFi to PROJxxxx where xxxx will be some characters. The connection password will be shown on the same SYNC screen. Use this password.
3. Ensure your iPhone is NOT connected to the SYNC WiFi hotspot in your MME which is something else altogether. If it is, you won’t be able to connect to CarPlay wirelessly. If are already connected to the in-car WiFi hotspot, you must disconnect from it and connect to PROJxxxx.
4. With your iPhone connected to your MME via Bluetooth and wirelessly via the PROJxxxx network ONLY, you’ll be able to enjoy wireless CarPlay. No more USB connection required!

Hope this solution helps all those who are having wireless CarPlay issues.

I've had the dealer insist that car play could only work unless hooked up to the USB.
I showed them it could work wirelessly.
However, I use the USB for car play so the phone doesn't lose charge.

I’m glad I’m good at cars and computers. Wouldn’t want to rely on dealer knowledge.

Thank you. One thing that I have found that helps: Turn off "personal hot spot" on the phone and it connects much more reliably.

Why would you walk around with personal hotspot on.
You do know that the phone won’t connect to any WiFi when hotspot is on.
And CarPlay uses WiFi to connect wirelessly.

It would happen if I was using my hotspot to connect my computer just before getting in the car-if I forgot to turn it off.

This sounds like fine advice for almost everyone. My only comment is that a wired connection has the advantage that your phone can use its wifi modem if (for example) you are parked in a place with good wifi but without a good mobile phone signal. If you are stuck this way, you have to force disconnect from the car's wifi. One might see this corner case trying to authorize public wifi in a parking garage without disconnecting carplay.

I am confused, all I needed to do was connect my iphone to my mache via the normal bluetooth phone pairing method, I then got pop up saying wireless carplay was available, click enable and bingo wireless carplay works.

Worked for me too... But I think the issues arise when folks have their phone connected to the vehicle WiFi hotspot.

Same here, it just worked, the only issue I have is some times there is a delay in it connecting when I first get in the car.

I want to thank Joel Morgan for posting this thread. While I have always used wireless CarPlay with my car, the connection at times has been flakey. Sometimes it only connects to Bluetooth audio only and I have to reboot sync or the phone to get wireless CarPlay to connect.

What I have noticed since doing this, it seems to connect faster and so far reliably too.

There is another potential problem..
The PROJxxxx WiFi connection sometimes does not show up on your iPhone to connect to it. The problem (bug?) is with the SYNC software.
As a solution, do the following:

1. Turn off wireless app projection on your SYNC Wireless Connectivity screen in your Mach E.
2. Turn off your Mach E WiFi hotspot connection on the same screen menu.
3. Switch off your Mach E.
4. Open your driver’s door and wait for your Mach E screen to go off.
5. Forget your Mach E on your iPhone (Bluetooth and CarPlay)
5. Close your driver’s door and switch on your Mach E so it is ready to drive. (Engine On).
6. Connect your iPhone to your Mach E via the iPhone cable plugged in to the Mach E USB port.
7. Follow the on screen instructions on your Mach E screen to reconnect to CarPlay.
8. Allow for CarPlay wireless connectivity when asked.
9. Let wired CarPlay fully connect to your phone.
10. Enable Wireless App Projection on your SYNC screen.
11. Ensure that PROJxxxx is now ON on the same screen. If not, turn it on manually.
12. Disconnect the USB cable connection.
13. Ensure your iPhone does not automatically connect to the in car WiFi hotspot. You’ll lose wireless CarPlay again if it does.
14. Look for PROJxxxx in iPhone WiFi settings and connect to the PROJxxxx wireless network.

This should now resolve PROJxxxx not connecting to your iPhone and not getting wireless CarPlay to work.

Hope this helps those still having issues with wireless CarPlay.

This might very well have been the case; however, it still didn't work for me when I stopped using the car's AT&T WiFi.

With Ford Streaming and the iPhone's cellular, I find I don't really need AT&T Enterprise at all, so I'll stop that service when I get around to it.
