yeah, I probably agree. leaving them on. they could have designed them as optional, but the look has grown on me. I still prefer the GTPE wheels, but the cleaning of all those little spokes... I'm too ocd...
I don’t think the GT-PE wheels will be much worse than my Pontiac Snowflake wheels. Given that the MME has regenerative braking, the GT-PE wheels will probably be easier. Except on track days, then maybe the same.

150lbs for lugnuts?!?!? What? that can't be right. Is EV that much different, I've always used 85-95lbs on ICE cars. From Chevelles to Modern Audis.. Doing some sleuthing, I see F150's etc call for that as well, that seems nuts to me. Wonder why it's so high.

150??

Aesthetically, I think I could go either way but I’m kind of worried about what kind of junk is going to pile up behind the covers in the winter. If there is a suitable center cap, I’d definitely take them off from December through March!

Thanks for taking the time to post this info!

Chevelles use a 7/16” stud. Smaller fastener requires less torque to gain the proper stretch. The MME uses a 14mm stud, so quite a bit larger.

@Scooby24 I think it looks way better without the covers. Can you take the cover to a machine shop and have them taper it down where the center of the wheel without the cover ends? Then take it to powder coating? I know that might be a little more than some people might want to spend but it's an option. I would just want to make sure it was done correctly so that it doesn't throw off balance.

If we look at the original renderings of the wheels it looks like that's what they did:

Thanks for nicely presenting this process. My service adviser didn't even know they are removable! I was debating whether to remove them, but for me the difference is too subtle and I will leave them on until I replace the wheels. One thing I do like about the aeros is the ease of cleaning.

I'm kind of worried that the black plastic will quickly become a scrated up mess though.

They 100% will. I spent the day polishing and ceramic coating the car and in the process polished out the wheels and aero inserts. The good news is a polisher with a 3" pad is perfect to get in the spokes and hit the aero covers. I coated the plastic with 2 layers of ceramic but I suspect even then it will end up getting scratched with time. The wheels see a lot of abuse and that plastic is soft.

Shameless plug for my now beautiful and clean car.

Honestly that would be way more work than it's worth....I'd rather just buy new wheels and get something wider with a better offset for 275/40R20 tires

Oh just saw you meant cut down the COVER and not the wheels.

You could but you cannot powder coat plastic as that's literally what the powder is that you then bake in the oven to melt....you'd end up with....a puddle of aero cover plastic lol.

Yeah now I'm not sure if I want to remove them, especially without a solution to reattach the center caps. Ok, now who is going to be the first to plasti-dip the wheels and the covers in different colors to let us know how that looks? ;)

I like the look of the covers removed.

In the interim of finding a suitable center cap, I wonder if a round disc can be fashioned to go over the axle spindle held in place by a chrome (or black painted) nut, such as an acorn nut? I just don't know the thread size of that spindle.

Think these might work?

I'm stepping up to be a guinea pig! Have a set on order and will report back.
