Mach E GTPE winter range loss

Just drove back to Columbus OH from Buffalo NY (335 miles). It was in the 30's for the whole drive. Very happy with the range considering the weather. I could have made it with just one stop if I wanted to.

Glad I wasn't driving a Tesla that would have given me the impression I could make the trip nearly without a stop!

Here is a summary of a 45 mile Tesla Model 3 round trip from January 2020 where:
1 - usable_battery_level

The takeaway is that Tesla is overly optimistic when you have a high SoC and loses more range than distance travelled, in this case the range changed from 246 - 179 which is 67 miles for a 45 mile trip. To show how optimistic Tesla is, 247 is 80% of the 310 mile max range. In July maybe, but in January freezing conditions it isn't going to happen. Ford is the opposite, very conservative with the displayed range which is why you see the GOM range go down in the winter months.

Plus if the article didn't control for location, there are a lot of California Teslas that don't see freezing temps (there are a disproportionate number of Teslas there), these would skew any results.

Notes:
1. Outside temps were below freezing, the 8°C start is the garage temperature.
2. I don't understand 4, it dropped to 120 when (3) was 193 but the went up to the end of the trip. At the 193 mile mark the elevation was 550m so seems to adjust it up since the return was downhill.

Unless Tesla has reinvented science, it's all the same . It's the nature of lithium batteries in the cold. There's nothing you can do about it.

The bottom line is all EV's lose a lot of range in the cold. Some might be better due to a heat pump but t's not like Tesla has some magic battery formula.

This information should be highlighted and disclosed when purchasing an EV. A lot of new buyers don't understand when it's freezing out, expect your range to drop like a rock.
