Excellent photos and information. I also was not aware of the camera heaters or the wiper park area heaters. Thanks for providing these, Lee.
Me either.

And since I’m in Florida and probably never need these things, can we turn them off?

These are thermal images of all the heated areas in the Mach-E. Taken with a tiny FLIR thermal camera that has poor resolution.

Air extractors under the rear bumper cover. This is where the warm cabin air exits your vehicle. If you use too much fan speed, this area will get hot. Marker light is also warm.

This one has personal significance. Notice the roof glass in front of the shark fin is cool. That's because I have my Reflextix covering the glass. It's doing a great job blocking heat loss, so good that you can clearly see its outline because I have some tiny gaps around the edges where some heat is getting through.

Notes:
  • Heated mirrors and wiper park areas seem to stay on all the time with AUTO.
    • You can feel the warm areas by hand
  • Rear defrost only comes on when you press the button
  • Front camera heater only comes on at startup, and you cannot manually activate it. It turns on itself when the view is blocked.
  • Using lower fan speeds will minimize the amount of warm air blowing out the rear vent extractors (wasted heat).
  • Reflectix roof covering is very effective at blocking heat loss.
Any heat signatures from the door lock button area?

The red dot is the parking sensor I believe. Also the large heated area is the rear radar (if it's cabin air exhaust heating it, that's just clever design, not coincidence).
Rear camera is also heated.

I live where it snows a lot, and when it sticks to the rear the heated areas are as visible as FLIR imaging...

because it is a vertical surface? Not gonna collect a lot of snow usually.
because the conductors that heat up will block the microwaves?

It did for me last year. It all stuck to the plastic and the distance detection was unavailable. I posted a picture of it somewhere here.

Looking at that trace for the heated front camera and wipers, it's weird they didn't include the heated windshield that the European market gets for us here in NA.

I didn’t know that Mach E has heated front camera after almost 3 years of ownership.

Question: what controls the heated front camera? When does it turn on? I’ve had occasions where I received alert that front camera is disabled due to foggy situation. I usually turn on Max Front Defrost when this happens. But now that I learned about front camera heater, maybe there’s an alternative fix?

At startup - when the outdoor temp is below 32ĀŗF the front camera heating element is tested on startup. In theory you could turn the car off and back on in an attempt to clear the camera.

When the camera detects a blockage - if it can't see anything it will turn the heater on.

Other than that you can't do anything. Max defrost will not turn it on.

This is all just extra weight and wasted electrical load in south Florida…until the wife (who thinks 65 is freezing) drives the car.
