We loved our 2021 Mach E. About a month ago I ran over a small median when making a turn. A couple of weeks later we got the Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced power alert, but the car seemed to work fine. Took the car to the dealer last week and they found batter acid on the back side of the battery pack and said the car was not drivable. The dealer quoted $63,000 (the line item cost of a new battery pack) to replace the battery. No labor cost (thanks) because the car needs the HVJB recalls so the battery needs to be dropped anyway. Crazy. Needless to say, we had to take the market value of the car from our insurance company. Not really strong data, but the insurance adjuster said he only had to total one other electric car for non-collision damage and it was a Mach E. Loved the car, but I don't think I am buying another one.

Non-collision damage? You hit the battery pack with a median strip. Sounds like collision damage to me.

You joined a forum after owning a car for 3 years to say "I hit a median strip and won't buy another one"?

That's what I was thinking. Though I could see replacing it with an EV with higher ground clearance in case of running over another small median. The bZ4X / Solterra has a pretty good ground clearance... ?

Another one bytes the dust too. Mine was in an accident and got totaled:
Ford Mustang Mach-E Mach E totalled 20240513_113435

The initial estimate was $30K. I was planning to turn it in next March when my Options loan was going to expire. So I'm coming out a little ahead. Since I don't nee a car for now, I planning to wait for a year and get MME Rally.

If you don't mind me asking, what trim and how many miles and how much did insurance give you?

The battery replacement cost is similar if not higher than what has been documented on the Motormouth YouTube channel re: at least two Ionic 5 battery cover/battery damage incidents caused by hitting debris of some type on the road. Those incidents were in Canada. The insurers involved totaled the cars because repair cost exceeded vehicle value. A couple of take aways include, possibly reconsider plans to lower your car, and stating the obvious, be alert to debris in the road and avoid if possible running over debris if you can safely avoid the debris.

42,000 miles - $30K which is about the value I saw online. We really wanted to keep it much longer, but alas. Mostly a bummer about the crazy high cost of the battery. The battery cost is more than we paid for a brand new car and the car is completely drivable.

I don’t know what trim your Mach E is (select / premium / GT etc.) but $30k for a 2021 Mach e that has run close to 50k miles is VERY good if it is anything under GT/GTPE. For GT/GTPE, I’d have expected to see 33k for those many miles. The $30k and another few thousand dollars would get you a super low mile 2023 Premium AWD Extended range or even a low like GTPE, if you ever decided to get a Mach E and not drive over medians this time around.

There is always a $40K 2022 Model Y.

I think the insurance company was fair with the value. I am just sad about the Ford cost for the battery pack. It was a pretty random issue, but not sure I'll take the risk again with the Mach E battery design. Although, a used Mach E is interesting.

I checked, didn't see any uparmoring of the battery protective plate for the Rally. If a low median can break a MME battery, I'd be hesitant to take the MME off road...
I'm not really interested in taking it off road. I just like the look of Rally.

I'd say you should get a second dealer opinion. Hard to believe 63k to replace the battery, unless there's other extensive damage that needs to be repaired you aren't mentioning. In the old "don't hook the rails to tow!" threads numbers more in the 20-30k range were quoted.

I can understand this if a replacement battery costs more than a new car. The ICE equivalent would be a new engine and transmission which would be less likely to total a late model vehicle plus you have used or rebuilt replacement options that EVs lack.

OP had an unfortunate accident but the unrepairability of EV batteries is the real villain and are not unique to the Mach-E. I hope the OP doesn’t give up on EVs as they have so much going for them. In the meantime someone will buy the salvage Mach-E at auction, locate a used Mach-E battery and put the car back on the road.

And I found one from a yard for $7500 + $1k'ish to ship. (Not sure how they'd work any kinda warranty for that, the seller, not Ford)
