I've had my car for 4 years and suddenly I find myself going on a trip where I will need to use a Tesla destination charger. This may be the one and only time I'll ever need this so I don't want to spend a lot of money. I found this one on Amazon for $40. Do you think it'll do the job? Or do you have a better cheap recommendation?

I’ve seen that one before and it had a bunch of bad reviews saying it failed after 1-2 uses. Looks like they removed the old listing and put up a new one to get rid of the bad reviews.

There’s a bunch of $50-60 ones that have hundreds of decent reviews. They should be fine. Don’t need to spend $100+ on one.

Also be sure to confirm that the destination charger is open to other EVs. Destination chargers can be set to allow Tesla charging only.

I would be wary of a unit that has zero reviews. Personally, I'd also be wary of the other cheap-o knock-offs from overseas. I'd stick with a known brand like TeslaTap, Lectron, or A2Z EV. Saving a few bucks on something that has to do with one of the main systems on a $50K+ car isn't something I'd do. ??

The only three brands / model I would buy for AC Level 2 NACS to J-1772 adapter is A2Z Stellar, UMC TeslaTap or Lectron J-1772

Lots of folks use a NACS Level 2 charger / Tesla destination chargers and pair it with an adapter to use it on their vehicle with J-1772 plug. This adapter works on Tesla home chargers and Tesla Destination chargers which are commonly found at shopping centers, grocery stores and Airbnb.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

Tesla Find Us Superchargers available with adapter / Magicdock location Chargers

I would recommend sticking with known brands like Lectron, A2Z and TeslaTap for your Level 2 AC adapter.

I personally bought the 48 amp Lectron and gave it away to a forum member and prefer to use the 80 amp A2Z Stellar with built in lock and compact design.

I am currently using the A2Z Stellar NACS to J-1772 adapter which is available for $92, compact build, has a built in lock, good customer service / warranty and overbuilt for futureproofing.

I personally keep both the OEM Tesla Level 3 DCFC adapter and A2Z Stellar AC / Typhoon Pro DCFC adapter to have myself covered at all times.

This ensures I have a backup always and I can charge at Tesla Destination chargers commonly found at hotels / shopping center / parking lots.

Discount promo code ā€œFORDā€ is still working for A2Z EV and free shipping is also available.

I have used this one for the past 9 months with no problem: POWER TALK Tesla Charger to J1772... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRL34J5K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I purchased another from Lectron which has worked also.
As side note, I have found that destination chargers do not support plug and charge. You will need to setup a Tesla account with the Tesla app to charge. The destination chargers are cheaper and much more convenient than Superchargers, mainly because it allows you to charge overnight instead of having to sit at a Supercharger and wait.

For the price, good reviews, and 10% off coupon for something that might sit in the frunk indefinitely (I may never need it), this was an easy buy.

Lectron occasionally shows up on woot pretty cheap. Just make sure you read the specs/info carefully, sometimes they label/title them weird (not sure which direction the NACS/J1772 is going)

Edit: just checked receipts, it was $60, refurbished by Lectron, full manufacturer warranty 2 years.
