That wasn’t their reasoning when they announced they were going to sell an extension cord.

Just after their competition showed they have a working prototype.

Not suspicious at all.

Tesla also says not to use any adaptor except the one they can’t ship out on time.

Sucks to be beat to market.
The reasons that I shared have been shared by others (probably smarter than me  ) and make sense.

I'll be interested to see if and how an extension cable would work, as well as any trade-offs (slower speed?).

A2Z has pretty good write up on their product page already. The cord will probably end up being limited, put they have stated to expect same charging rate as their adapters.

So might end up being slower charging for vehicles with higher charge speeds, but Mach E will be fine.

It’s not like you can’t make a long DC cord that isn’t liquid cooled, it’s just going to be thicker and more expensive.

No doubt that the design decisions that went into the Supercharger were "short sighted" (pun intended). Tesla also seemed to balk and hesitate with the deployment of the Magic Dock interface. For all their promotion about the greening of automobile infrastructure, they seem to do a fine job of painting circumstances into a corner and failing to put (all) end users first. For those reasons I feel little remorse for taking up two parking spaces at Supercharging stations, albeit inconvenient and frustrating.

I can’t fault Tesla for their design, and don’t consider it to have been ‘short-sighted’ but rather, and for the time, a good business strategy. They were designing an eco-system for Tesla owners that made that system highly desirable and an advantage over other competitors who might foreseeable entertain the market. Also, other charging solutions did ultimately enter the fray for the benefit of non-Tesla EV owners and in theory, obviated the need for Tesla to even consider opening theirs up. It’s certainly not Tesla’s fault that all those other charging solutions suck and have actually helped sour new EV owners’ experience and help promote anti-EV rhetoric. It was inevitable then that other manufacturers would want to offer that advantage to their customers, short cables and all.
That said, now that they are opening up their network, it IS their fault that they are not making the necessary changes to accommodate all the new users, which a longer cable would easily accommodate. Even if they started by only fitting two out of every twelve chargers it would be a huge help! In the meantime, they are only frustrating Tesla owners since in most instances two bays will be occupied for each non-Tesla user.

In response to cable being too short, while we are in the fall and to get that close to the curb to plug is surely a challenge the adapter will be rendered useless in the winter if there is a few inches of snow in front of the curb.

Well the extension cord ended up being in stock for about 20 minutes before switching back to coming soon.

So either some exciting new coming or I have a refund coming.

Rumor is they got Tesla involved so best case this is going to end up being an officially supported cord.

*Edit*

They refunded it already (not too shocked), claim they are still working on final testing of vehicles with high charging curves (yeah….cord would be fine for us already!!). Soon though! Sooooon.

I hadn't realized it had come in stock - I gave my email for an update, but never got one.

I got an email today from A2Z saying those were available (EMAIL said "DC | NACS Extension Cord | 6-9 FT (2-3 meters") is available now! Get it now before it goes out of stock again!) but the website says "out of stock". Not sure why they sent the email?
Sounds like someone in MarCom messed up to me. ?‍♂?

They were updating the website and in stock counters accidentally got reset. They do claim it will be soon though.

Also for the people claiming no one will buy it….about 100 of us got an order in during the less than 20 minutes it was listed in the middle of the night.

That about $30,000 in sales right there….

When you tried to place your order were you given an option of selecting a length, 6 or 9 feet? If so, did you notice whether or not a weight was listed? I’m on that info mailing list too. Although I didn’t jump on trying to order. Pebbles the ? had other plans for me, namely a walk, immediately if not sooner.
