This morning I moved my 22 in my flat driveway and had to manually release the parking brake for the first time ever. Thought it odd, my guess is they will be deleting the pawl mechanism and going with the ebrake all the time to save on cost.

IMO, the parking brake not illuminating when the parking brake has been set (whether manually or automatically) is a problem. You should see indicator whether parking brake is on.
I agree, to the extent that a parking brake indicator exists on the dash so it should be used consistently.

However, the vehicle is in Park "gear," which is indicated. And there has never been a special indicator for the park pawl.

I have noticed that my car now sets the parking brake when I put the car in park. I think this feature was there if one was on a steep hill, but it never worked on my driveway.

I know that this was not happing on my car at least as of last month because if I ever did not set the brake after I put it in park, the car would roll back and I can feel the car stop on the parking pawl. It appears that my car at least does automatically set the brake now when it is in park.

I received 23-PU0105-DC-CHG2 on June 6th and on June 7th my car updated to 4.2.6. I had not driven the car much until yesterday. When I came home and put the car in park I heard the parking brake set. The red brake light does NOT illuminate but the parking break does seem to set. I drove to a very flat section of road and put it in park and I do now hear the brake setting.

I had just left this voice feedback to Ford on my card on May 12:

"even a Toyota corolla has a parking brake that automatically sets when you put the car in park."

So I think my car is now operating the parking brake automatically now (exactly as I was hoping it would operate). Has anyone else noticed this feature in operation and/or know what update changed this?
Our 2021 GTPE has that already.

22 GT here, I have all the available OTA updates and mine doesn’t set the brake when shifting to park, except when I’m on a hill.

Maybe there's an as-built config change that enables it. It must be more than just module software versions since there's such a mix of results.

This is a great(?) example of the lack of adequate detail in the update notes. A change like this should be clearly stated @Ford Motor Company.

What are these "parking pawls" that people keep talking about? I just pull in until the car tells me I'm getting too close to my lawn mower and stop. Oh, and I have noticed the parking brake turn on lately too

Non-engineer explanation:

It's a thingamabob that sticks into the gearing to hold the vehicle in Park. Because of play in the gearing, it allows a vehicle to sometimes lurch back and forth as it catches on either side. Some say to always set the brake first, or you could break off the parking pawl. Many people with automatic transmissions never using the parking brake, and on some vehicles the mechanism rusts from lack of use.

This change could be to stop the lack of use problems, or to stop breaking the pawl on cars with it.

For those who have the parking brake automatically engage, does it automatically disengage as soon as you shift out of Park? Or does it stay engaged until you press the accelerator?

It's like the parking brake is not even on, except I know it is because the car does not move when putting it into or out of park. There's no difference when accelerating from a stop, it's really seamless. I use 1PD.

So without 1PD, does it creep when you shift to Drive? Or not until you press the accelerator?

Thanks! I'm one of those "never use the parking brake" people. I've only noticed one jarring/lurching lately, but it was I accidentally put it in park while the car was rolling a bit. - still not completely used to the shift dial.

Mine doesn't engage automatically, yet and I'm fully updated with FDRS. When I do use it, it'll only disengage if you release it manually or if you touch the accelerator in both 2PD and 1PD.
