I know nothing about tires, do we need XL load range given how heavy we are or is SL still fine?

I saw somewhere mention "RL" as well for EVs but I can't find much about it nor were they widely available, is that in between SL and XL? Is there any downside to just doing XL then?

You need XL tires. Most quality sources for tires will let you put in the vehicle and only recommend tires for that vehicle. Any installer should refuse to put on tires that aren't XL.
