So I am new here and will be downgrading vehicles to a 23 Mach-E GTPE via a lease trade hopefully soon (has around ~13K mi). I live in the NE climate, and with all the snow, sleet, and freezing temperatures I know that summer tires should not be used in the winter. When looking over the vehicle (which was sitting for over a month), I noticed there was some semi-deep cracking near the treads. I was naturlly concerned with what I saw, and the current owner said he would have it looked at but either case it would be replaced under my dime. He might throw in some money, but I don't expect much since he won't be driving it anymore. The pickup location is around 60 miles away, and mainly highway.

Can I driving home with this cracking at highway speeds? If they need to be replaced, what can I replace them with thats "cheap" but dependable? I have around 14 months left on this lease, so I don't want to spend lots of money on tires. I might do some spirited high MPH driving, but no tracks days or anything like that.

Unfortunately, I didn't take my pictures but I created something like what I have seen. The red lines show where the cracking is happening.

EDIT: I looked for "cheap" tires for the GTPE, and it recommended the Sentury UHPT. I am not sure I want to go that cheap howerver.

P Zero tires have a temp range. When used in colder temps, they will become hard, slick, and crack, as you have noted. They have to be removed in cold temps, and stored at 20F or above.

If I was buying them, I would a) ensure they were properly inflated and b) not exceed 50mph and drive very cautiously.

Tires you buy must have the proper load rating for the vehicle. Cheap tires aren't cheap, you will likely pay between $800 and $1,000, versus $1,200 for good tires.

yeah, depends on how much you want to spend, but definitely all season instead of summer based on your location and weather.

i just spent $280/ea on 245/45/20 michelin pilot sport AS 4s. well worth it to me and i'm in california! :)
