It isn't just about supporting the number one threat to the US, the CCP is using commercially sold technology to spy on us. The entire car can be a spy device rather than just a few components that slip by Ford QA.

I won't buy a Volvo or any other CCP controlled car. It is too bad because it looks pretty cool.
What phone do you have?

....what's the hangup?

I would rather buy a Vietnamese EV. Would you buy a Russian EV if it were available?

That's true, but a logical fallacy you often see drawn from that point (speaking in general, not attributing to you) is that "well because you own a phone/toaster/whatever made in China, you're a hypocrite for having a problem with a car made in China."

There's a difference between a vehicle made in NA by a US company with 2% chinese parts content and a vehicle made in china by a chinese company with 99% chinese parts.
I don't think that's a logical fallacy at all. Foxconn are making any and everything for your phones for many manufacturers including Apple and Google. What's the difference? Software?

Whatcha think the CCP is going to do with data it gets from a car that it can't get from an app on your phone?

Why would any American buy a Chinese made EV?
I did. I sold my mach e about 10 months ago and bought a PS2. I really enjoy it (I enjoyed my mach e for the most part (hated sync)) and I much prefer dealing with Volvo/Polestar for my issues than Ford. Plus my PS2 is more efficient than the Mach e and I drive to different courthouses all over the front range so that has been helpful.

I wouldn't buy a Russian EV because I wouldn't trust it would be a quality product and that would be the only reason.

I'm not one that buys into boycotting an otherwise good product because I disagree with non-related factors like politics. That's buying into cancel culture...not part of that movement.

As for paranoia regarding data...well...seems like there are a whole lot easier ways to get the info they want than using a car. But I'm sure there are plenty of conspiracy rabbit holes I could find my way into if I went looking.

First of all, my phone isn't made in China, so your premise is false.

Second, privacy is mentioned nowhere in the post you responded to and only a small part of my argument. See my earlier post.

This is a strawman that nobody is arguing. The only person creating a conspiracy is you. :)

So what's the concern? human/labor rights? Are there direct links to show volvos are being made by children or Uyghurs or is this more of a general thing?

My phone is Korean (Samsung).

Here are the facts. If they don't bother you, no problem. I am not taking it personally at all.

1. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is the enemy of free people everywhere.
2. The CCP is the enemy of the United States, and they are actively working against us daily.
3. The CCP has infiltrated technologies used throughout the world. Hauwei is just one example and it is well known Hauwei technology is being used by the CCP to collect data and spy on us.
4. We can only guess regarding what the CCP is doing with the data, but they are our enemy. Do you want to give our enemy your data?
5. It is impossible to know how many CCP infected devices we own. But a car company controlled by the CCP is guaranteed to have CCP infected devices in it. The entire car is suspect, IMO.

This is not a conspiracy theory, and it is not cancel culture to try to avoid giving our enemy our data. I am with you regarding cancel culture BTW. But this isn't that. The CCP needs to be defeated, and buying their cars is not the way to do it IMO.

For this to make sense in my mind, there needs to be a direct link between Volvo and the CCP.

Is there one? I know Huawei is beholden to the CCP...but is Geely?

The US govt has taken a stance on Huawei...if Volvo was using Huawei components that it deemed a concern, it seems logical in my mind that they wouldn't have any concern pointing this out. Have they?

And what came of Volvo buying out Geely's investment in the company? Seems that should bode well for concerns. https://www.caixinglobal.com/2021-0...-lifting-foreign-ownership-cap-101743869.html

I like it a lot, but to be honest I'm not a fan of the Chinese connection. To me "full control" is a bit different from "parts", and I will try to support North American workers when I can. There is a Ford plant in my town - my neighbours work there, and at some point I'd love to own the EV they will eventually build there, certainly over something made in China.

The Chinese do the same I'm sure - NIO / BYD etc. over Tesla / Ford / VW / etc.

Bottom line is I love the design though

This is the same reason why we ( as Canadians who are allowed to) do not vacation in Cuba any more. I don't want to fund the Cuban military, which is where all the Tourism dollars go - the military owns the hotels and the tour companies. It's not even a secret.

Not interested.

what's the expected price and range?
It’s in the press release link- 350 mile targeted range. Not sure on price.

The performance looks good though:

Performance

Polestar 4 is the fastest production car the brand has ever developed. The 0-62 mph sprint can be completed in just 3.8 seconds[1] and maximum power output is 400 kW (544 hp). Motors are of a permanent magnet, synchronous design. Driving dynamics are true to the Polestar brand – sharp steering and handling responses result in a thrilling and nimble driving experience for all occupants.

We buy everything else from there.

Not sure that our “assembled in Mexico with parts from China” Mach E is much better.

Sad but true: was in Washington DC a few weeks ago. At the official White House welcome center and museum there is a gift shop.

Almost everything in the gift shop was made in China.
