most sites use https now anyways so it wouldn't matter
You could have simply said you don't understand how traffic flows. SSL does nothing for you when you're securely connected to the malicious actor, or SSL has been filtered and the device reverts to no encryption.

YouTube on the car has been pretty convenient for us.
I was more poking fun at the choice Ford made to offer Hoda Kotbe and Al Roker on demand to Mach-E owners.

This is to help enable advertising on our screens.
Coming sooner than the frunk release thanks to Starbucks, McDonald’s and Amazon.

That sounds like a question for Google.
I don't know about that. Countless users on this forum have assured me that every other purveyor of software rolls updates out to all users and devices at the same time. Not like the software disaster Ford does in waves. ? ?

People might see that I have an abnormal interest in watching YouTube cat videos while at DCFCs ?
There's absolutely nothing abnormal about watching YouTube cat videos, no matter where you are at at the time.

This assumes the client (vehicle) is not compromised, or that any data that is being transmitted to Ford is encrypted at rest and in transit. It does not even have to be WiFi that causes trouble. Bluetooth can as well.

There is a lot of data that can be captured by Ford and can probably be associated with you by merely logging in with your account.

  • Home location
  • Email address
  • WiFi SSIDs and passwords
  • Ford account info

Bad actors are often after bits of information about people, that they can then associate with other information they've gathered to make it easier to steal identity info, etc. Hit up have i been pwned and enter an email address. High chance it's out there. I am incredibly careful, and all my active email addresses have been found via breaches over the years.

Connecting to any public WiFi without a VPN is not a good idea. Install DuckDuckGo's browser and enable App Tracking Protection on your phone. It'll show you what data is being shared with whom. Over the past 7 days, across 38 applications installed on my phone, there have been 286,713 tracking attempts. The data includes my name, email address, home address, IP info, app usage information, etc. If I am not blocking those attempts, I am trusting that the information is being secured on my phone and when it's sent to whomever is tracking, and that they're keeping it secure when they receive it.

TLDR; Unless SYNC is also acting as a VPN or routing traffic through some secure service (and they very well might be,) I'd be hesitant on connecting to rando public WiFi.
I tried that URL. My 2 common email addresses were hits, as expected. My other two “unknown” email addresses are clean. They both are known only by a handful of human beings who never use them to communicate with me, and I almost never access them.

Actually, to be fair, Microsoft sort of rolls out software in “waves”. They have different “channels”, and you receive software according to the “channel” you are in, so you may not receive software for up to a year after another person (I’m speaking about the enterprise and there are lots of other complications).

Watching cat videos and YouTube is not the problem. It's the fact that you go to YouTube to see a video on something like "Replacing a tierod on your F-150" and then before you know it, it's 4 hours later when you find yourself still on YouTube watching cat videos!
