Range drastically drops

Mileage estimate went from 240 down to 170 when driven only a few miles. That's a 70 mile change that occurred suddenly. I've had the car since 2021 so have gone through winters here in NC. I know about mileage estimate being lower in winter. This time however it jumped from 240 to 170 almost immediately, while driving. <--THAT'S what seems abnormal to me.

Were you using the Navigation system?

Your 2021 received an OTA a while ago that added "intelligent range". Why is it intelligent? Hah! Nobody knows.

But what it does is adjust the range based on your route, expected speed and climate. It will drop suddenly when "intelligent range" figures out what it thinks your real range will be (often right after you set the route, sometimes it takes longer).

I have had my Nav start a route without me giving it a destination. It is set when I start the car. It is possible you had a destination set and didn't know it. It does not display the Nav when it does that, so you might miss the fact the Nav is routing for you. That would kick in intelligent range as well.

The uphill thing is real. I've had Ford Navigation say I could make it to my destination and the GOM say I can't. Makes me nervous even though it shouldn't.

My dad and i took mine up Mount Washington, we got all but 13 miles on the way back down.

The range algorithm that the cars, including and not limited to Ford products are based on driving habits and aren't that accurate. If you put your foot down all the time your range will change and the algorithm will change with that behavior. I would suggest resetting your mileage setting in your control panel of your Maki and if you're trying to see what your best range possible is be sure to make sure you turn off all electronics drive and temperate weather for your test and see what kind of mileage you really can get. Remember the mileage that they show when you buy the car is in the best condition as possible temperate weather nothing turned on inside the car one driver with no radio air or anything on probably on smooth dry non-windy conditions anything to increase mileage everybody's mileage is going to vary based on their driving habits where they drive and the weather they're driving in cold weather really affects battery performance so preconditioning prior to leaving with the car plugged in as a big help.

It just depends on how "smart" your GOM is.

It's also not as drastic as an EV since ICE vehicles generally use the engine waste heat for cabin heater, but cold weather definitely impacts MPG. https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/fuel-economy-cold-weather

Well, I have 400,000 miles of MPG data from the same car running the same 165 daily commute for 15 years year-round. Miles/fuel fill. The statistical deviation between summer (beginning of June - end of Sept) and winter months (beginning of November - End of March) is a bit over 1 MPG (change in MPG is around =/- 1%), which is no different than the deviation over the entire dataset. I have four different cars with such MPG data, those cars were not as consistently driven as the 400,000 mile car, but the results of the data analysis are similar. ICEV cars do not lose 35% of range in the winter months. EV lose range due to cold weather because of cabin heating and less efficient chemical reaction in the battery cells, which happens at both temperature extremes.

Like I said, drive your car at 70PMH into a headwind in cold weather and tell me your MPG doesn’t drop.

And thats before you get to the actual research that shows ICE vehicles are in fact less efficient at lower temps….but maybe your vehicle is special. Or your temps are not actually cold. You are also including part of Fall and Spring in winter months to bring up the average number…..

I agree: the GoM sometimes looks like it's not even "guessing"; it's just rolling dice for a number.

I've regularly made a re-charge stop and trusted the GoM to give me an accurate % charge required to reach my destination. Even with an hour of drive history on the very highway I'm about to return to, the GoM is wildly unreliable. The battery range displayed will drop after leaving the charger and returning to the same highway I had been driving.

What would be a nice update is a screen that lets you see what the values of the input data the car is using , so one could make any manual adjustments based upon your real plan.

In winter, you are better off using the seat warmer and steering wheel warmer as opposed to the forced air. This will improve range.

I'm a new mache owner, what i have noticed is that the weather (i.e. coldness,heat) doesn't affect the milage as much as everyone has said, at least with my driving. The battery self regulates itself for the temp outside. But you do have to look at it from a different angle, when it's hot the motor isn't working in over drive to cool you off. I'm a 66° on fan speed one, but I have noticed that when it's cold I use 21% of my battery to heat my car this includes; heated seats and the steering wheel. When I'm not using my heated seats or the steering wheel it's still roughly 14%-15%. I also recently saw on the forum that the lighting is having the same issues, right now 2024 I have a 2023. It also depends on your driving style. I use whisper more than I do engage or unbridled and I can feel the difference between the two. Engage although it doesn't seem like it can use the battery a bit faster than whisper does because it's the mid between the two. Android auto has made it easier for ev users as it now tells me what percentage I will be at wherever I'm going, I use roughly 6% each trip to and from work. I have the extended range but have just noticed a change in general on my milage dropping. I will be taking my car to the shop in a couple weeks because it's confusing me.

They have this it's the "Trips" from the other apps screen it was the "Where is my energy going" but they changed it this tells you where all your energy is going for your trip. The C-Max has it set up where it shows you instead of giving you a little chart of where your energy is going.
