I ordered a A2Z adapter last week (they ship to the US so fast! How much are they losing on international priority?!) and went to test it 2 nights ago.

Went to a Telsa V3 (no silver ring on cable) station near me > plugged the adapter into the charge port > activated the stall through Tesla app > plugged in to the back of the adapter > 30 seconds later I got the blinking orange light and "charge fault" message.

I tried reinserting the adapter and pushing with moderate force, cancelling the tesla app charge and starting over...

Only thing I didn't try was putting the Tesla plug into the adapter first then inserting.

Plug and charge is enabled on the car but I initiated the charge from the Tesla app first.

Any ideas?

If it's the first time you used the A2Z, you might be surprised just how hard you have to push the Tesla connector into the adapter. You should hear a satisfying click, on success.

If I hadn't experienced it becoming substantially easier over the first 4 or 5 attempts, I might have been less approving of the adapter than I currently am.

While I have not used the A2Z adapter, some friends have one and we have compared our experiences — me using the Ford adapter with my Lightning. First thing you do when you get to a charger is to plug your adapter onto the end of the charge cable, then follow the instructions for the charger. So I’ve found for Tesla and EVGO with NACS you connect your adapter, then activate the charger in the app, then plug into the vehicle. If you have Plug And Charge turned on and credit card info in your FordPass, Tesla is connected where it will *usually* just start charging when you plug into and you don’t need to use the Tesla app at all.

The real trick with Tesla chargers is there are still a lot of V2 units out there on rural routes and really throughout the Midwest. These are not compatible with non-Teslas. Most of their V3 stations are open to and same with the few V4 locations out there. So make sure you’re going to a location that says it’s open to CCS charging.

It’s possible your connection order may have caused the charge fault, but it’s also possible the charger location isn’t open to your car.

Along with what others have said….i have had a time when activating with the Tesla app wouldn’t work. So I stopped trying, just let plug and charge activate and that worked fine.

Didn’t get my discount because of it but oh well.

First rule of the Tesla supercharger club for non-Tesla evs, always, always, always, check the Tesla, app (after you have entered your vehicle details into the app), the Tesla website, the Ford Pass app or the public charging app in the vehicle to find the location of V3 and V4 superchargers that non-Tesla evs are allowed to charge at. Just bc it was a Tesla V3 supercharger doesn't mean that particular station is open to non-Tesla evs. Did you check the Ford Pass app, Tesla app, Tesla website or public charging app in the Mach E before you went to the station? That's the 1st thing you need to do before trying to charge at a Tesla supercharger.

Secondly, you said that you have Plug and Charge activated in the Ford Pass app, I assume. If you have Plug and Charge activated, there is no need for you to use the Tesla app to activate the stall. If you clicked activate in the app and then you plug in while P&C is active, the payment backend for the Tesla network could react in a weird manner that could result in payment confusion, which may have resulted in the error you saw. But the error you saw could have come from being at a supercharger that non-Tesla evs don't have access to. We don't know for sure.

Did you try to move your car to another stall?

When you inserted the adapter onto the supercharger cable handle, did you hear a click, which would signify that the adapter has been properly latched onto the cable handle?

My first experience with the typhoon pro was a fail. As noted by Snakebitten, it takes a good, solid push of the tesla plug into the adapter. I think that’s where I failed. I’d follow A2Z’s order of operations instructions. My subsequent use of the adapter has gone fine. Keep at it, you’ll get it, presuming there isn’t some defect in the unit, which I tend to think unlikely.

It is quite amazing the number of people that try to charge at non-compatible Tesla locations.

Yup, connect the adapter to the charge cable first before plugging into charging port. That is the procedure for Tesla Destination charger adapters too.

Ditto on check the compatibility too. Both the Ford Pass App and in-vehicle Public Charging screens will show if Tesla chargers are compatible or not. Not as seamless as Ford initially said....Good luck

Yes, app shows "NACS adapter required" for my car. also a Rivian R1S was charging there.

I did this to try and get the cheaper Tesla rate (or does Plug and Charge use the the same without a membership?)

Did you try to move your car to another stall?

No, most stalls were taken and I had to park at the very end and take up 2 spots so I didn't want to hang around.

When you inserted the adapter onto the supercharger cable handle, did you hear a click, which would signify that the adapter has been properly latched onto the cable handle?

Thought I did, will check again.

Turn off plug and charge if you're going to use your Tesla membership. That way you can try to activate the supercharger from the Tesla app without the potential for payment conflicts.

Some users on this forum have reported issues trying to activate the supercharger from the Tesla app so that they could use their Tesla membership. Your mileage may vary. Plug and Charge doesn't allow you to attach any charge-point operator's membership plan........that includes Tesla, EA, EvGO, ect.

Next time you charge using the adapter, attach the adapter to the charger handle first, making sure that you listen for a click sound to indicate that the adapter has been properly fitted.

I would try again.

I have the Typhoon Pro, and I have not had an issue getting it connected.

A2Z suggests plugging the adapter into the car first. This is what I do. Best part here is that you can lean into it to ensure a good seat.

Plug and Charge should just work. If it does not, you should be able to start with the app. Be sure you have the correct post at the correct location. If that does not work, try a different location after ensuring the Tesla app agrees that it will work with a non-Tesla.

If you can initiate a charge with the app, but Plug and Charge does not work, you can try to turn off Plug and Charge, wait a bit, then turn it back on. There might be an issue with the certificates that make Plug and Charge work.

I went back to the same station tonight since it was only at 15% capacity and had a successful charge.

I did use a different terminal and also put the Tesla plug into the adapter first then inserted it both into the car. So I'm not sure what the original issue was. I'll have to try what I did before again to figure it out.

I got about 80kW at ~60% SoC and went down to 34kW at 80%.

Also a side note for anyone new to the A2Z Typhoon Pro when releasing the Tesla charger from the adapter - push the Tesla plug in first a bit then press the release button then pull. You should be able to feel the pin.
