Unfortunate news from Thule. Still awaiting a final decision from Yakima.

Sorry for the delay, we still have no update for a fit for this vehicle

After extensive testing by our engineers, this car is deemed a no fit due to the fact that there is no safe place to attach the rack to the roofline of the vehicle.

thanks
Best regards,
Nancy

Wow, that's a pretty definitive no from Thule. The response Yakima gave me was more of a "wait and see".

A bit disconcerting. Thule isn't going to say no without reason. Thule also has no roof racks for the Model Y

I don’t have my MME yet but I’ve had a lot of roof racks over the years and I’m surprised that they can’t figure something out. I wonder if the “no” has anything to do with the glass roof. (And if so then at least try to make a rack for us Select folks!).

I can't say I'm surprised. I think they just don't want to take the liability with the glass roof. My son had a Scion with a glass roof, and even years after its release, Thule and Yakima would not offer any roof mounting options for it.

Wonder how many cars with full glass roofs have traditional foot-type roof rack fits by Yak and Thule. Maybe they would rather not be involved with potential liability if some knucklehead (like me) improperly installs it or overloads it and the glass cracks.

Or drops their bike forks onto the glass roof!

I don't believe Yakima has a solution for the Model Y either. I suspect it's because of the panoramic glass roofs are a little too big, which in turn would allow the remaining metal structure to flex a bit too much under the load of a roof rack and lead to degradation of the glass seal. I say this because I see other cars with pano glass roofs and roof rack solutions have a smaller area for the glass and roof rails are integrated into the roof design (see Hyundai, I think).

Anyone know if there's possibility to install one? Ford should offer this as optional accessory, just like the tow hitch.
I think I am going to start calling it a station wagon, there is no utility (SUV) without roof rails and a trailer hitch.

I call mine a station wagon. With only 5” of ground clearance that seems the most accurate category, even if it is a marketing death sentence 😆

Yakima pointed me towards their custom install, aka drilling holes in the roof.
