me within less then an hour about where there were
The last gm product I bought was a 1984 truck. So disappointed I have never bought another until my son-in-law blew up his 2006 cobalt. I needed a car for my daughter so I bought it from him and put a salvage engine in it. First thing was a bad water pump. I cannot believe that gm would design a water pump that when fails would dump antifreeze into the crankcase. Dumbest design I have ever seen. I managed to get it repaired before any serious damage was done. GM just cannot get my business.

I won't be getting a Lightning either. I placed a reservation about 2 or 3 minutes once the system opened and yet I still didn't get on the 'First 25' list at my dealership. Probably because I wasn't willing to pay ADM. Oh well, I still have my SuperDuty that is paid for so I guess I get to keep my $80k for a while longer. :)

The Lightning is really huge though. Probably too big for my garage or any reasonable parking spaces. A smaller truck like the Rivian or Hummer might be a better fit for me anyway. As long as it can tow at least 11,000 lbs then I'll be okay. The Lightning was 1,000 lbs short if I remember correctly.....
Huge? F-150 SuperCrew with 5.5 foot bed. Standard F-150 size.

yet it is the size you prefer.....
No. It's too wide.
I drive a double-cab, long-bed Tacoma.
The Hummer is 18.5" wider than the Taco. It's 6" wider than the R1T. The F-150 is also massive (another 2 inches wider than the Hummer), and once we get a chance to test drive one, I'm pretty sure we'll drop it as an option. Most problematic: the Hummer is >30% more expensive than the F-150 Lightning.

Double-check the Hummer EV specs. As far as I can tell, they're rated at 7500 pounds towing.

If Toyota would get off its duff and build an electric Tacoma, or if any of the experienced manufacturers would build a mid-sized EV truck with towing capacity of >7500 pounds and a range of >300 miles, we'd be right in line.

VehicleLengthWidth w/mirrors openHeight
Tacoma (ICE)212"75.2"70.6"
R1T217"87.1"73.1"
Hummer EV216.8"93.7"79.1"

Of course every vehicle made in 1984 was junk so… ?

The Silverado is simply a modern Avalanche but GM can’t make itself use the name. I owned the original for 12 years and it was perfect for my use. Can’t wait to get an electric version. Hopefully my Lightning reservation will pan out for a couple of years and then I’ll flip it for what I really want long term.

Yep. They keep getting bigger and bigger. Next to the Rivian and Hummer, the Lightning is gigantic. It doesn't need to be that big. Removing the engine, transmission, exhaust system, fuel tank etc liberates a bunch of things so the vehicle doesn't need to be so large.

Oh yeah. They are kinda wide. The Tacoma is pretty small though....about Ranger or Gladiator size, correct? Isn't the Tundra the big truck? That would be a better comparison IMO. But yeah, if you want a Tundra size truck that will do some real work then it might be a while.

Has the Hummer tow rating been published yet? The GM folks were talking like it was going to have a higher tow rating than the Rivian. ???
Must have just been trade show talk...

The Tundra is larger than the Tacoma, yes.
2022 Tundra (also updated in the table):
Length = 233.6"
Width = 80.2"
Height = 78.0"

But the Tacoma is not irrelevant because I'm comparing what I have now with what I might buy as an EV. I'd be replacing a mid-sized pickup and I would prefer something that's not too big. Most of my work is hauling small tractors, generators, welding, and other building equipment a few hours on the freeway and a few hours on dirt roads. Most of my play with the truck is offroading, towing a travel trailer, and exploring deserts and mountains. I don't need a physically massive truck for either work or play. I don't need 11,000 pounds towing capacity.

The F150-Lightning is on our list simply because it's the first real-world, production electric truck by a vehicle manufacturer (as opposed to a tech startup like Rivian). But we'd prefer something physically smaller. If I could get a Tacoma-sized BEV pickup with 400+ miles range and 7500 lbs towing, for about $40k to $50k, it would be perfect (I know that price range is a dream).

However, I'd compromise on size if I can get an affordable, capable, long-range truck. I wouldn't be too sad if my towing capacity went up to 10,000 pounds, but I'm not going to pay $100k for that.

The Hummer towing capacity is published on the GMC site:

Ah ya of course the Lightning is big, it's an F150, I won't not co sides it if what you want is a Tacoma size. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 crew cad long bed, so the short bed Lightning and Silverado EV will be a smaller vehicle for me lol.

I think the Silverado EV looks to be a way cooler truck than the F150 Lightning.

But they are both vaporware at this point, so who really knows?
I’ve definitely seen more Lightning out in the wild than Silverado

I'm pretty much frustrated with Ford Dealership service and have decided to not order a Lighting and put my order in for a Silverado EV. Dealership actually followed up with me within less then an hour about where there were and what they knew, which was just confirming orders and contact info and still waiting on pricing guides and such. Worth a shot to see what they can do, after all at least they have experience with the Bolt.
My uncle ordered the $125k Hummer EV over a year ago and the dealership knows absolutely zero about when it’s coming or any sort of status, even though that’s the only version shipping now, so it’s not like Chevy dealers are much better

One would think the whole point behind the Lightening is that it’s an F-150, The #1 selling truck truck in North America since Columbus sailed. If Ford made it smaller, it would then be called a Ranger, which I think they mentioned is coming.

I guess I'm at a loss to understand what the issue is. When the Lightning was announced, it was made clear that it's an F-150 sitting on an electric drivetrain. This was done for many reasons. Given that information, everyone knew how big it would be - the size of an F-150. Taking away the contractor special one door model, that leaves basically a SuperCab with suicide doors, or a SuperCrew with 4 doors. Most popular? SuperCrew. Now, given that, the bed size could be 5.5 feet or 6.5 feet. Most popular? 5.5 feet, because that configuration fits into the garage (SuperCrew, 5.5 foot bed), at roughly 19' long.

Rivian and Hummer are new designs. Lightning is not.

The 2022 F-150 SuperCrew 5.5' bed has the following specs:

Wheelbase - 145.4"
Overall length - 231.7"
Cab height - 77.2"
Width with standard mirrors - 95.7"

The Lightning's specs are:

Wheelbase - 145.5" (1/10" longer)
Overall length - 232.7" (1" longer)
Cab height - 78.9" (1.7" taller)
Width with standard mirrors - 96" (0.3" wider)

The 2013 F-150 SuperCrew 6.5' bed (i.e. the same overall truck) has the following specs:

Wheelbase - 144.5"
Overall length - 231.9"
Cab height - 76.7" (4x4)
Width with standard mirrors - 97"

I wouldn't say that it keeps getting bigger.

Did you get to see the Hummer at Barrett-Jackson or Mecum this year? I was pleasantly surprised with it's form factor. it's overall size is in between the Rivian and Lightning and the interior was pretty cool. The removable roof panels was pretty cool and the power points at the rear bumper are pretty neat. I can see that thing being a good daily driver and really fun weekend warrior. GM says it will tow quite a bit too. Hmmmm..... ?

I was at Barrett Jackson last year when they auctioned off VIN 1, but not at Mechum this year. Better yet I got to see 17 Hummers at the GM media event at Statefarm Stadium two weeks ago. I did not get a test drive, but a guy there let me sit in one and check out some of the features; frunk, multipro tailgate, powered tonneau cover, etc. Here is how it will look in my driveway next to my Mach E.

Hummer is much larger, it is the size of a Raptor. Very wide, makes the Rivian look like a toy.

7500 lbs. tow, 1300 lbs. payload.

hummer ev towing capacity - Search (bing.com)

these are substantially lower than the R1T, at 11,000/1,700.

yes, all things considered, this is dumb, and a good example of why I don't really give the Hummer EV a lot of credit, ultimately, as being anything more than a proof of concept for GM being able to make an EV pickup. The Explorer Sport Trac would tow nearly that much (7000 lbs. with appropriate configuration), and I bet very few people consider the Sport Trac to be a "real" pickup.
