A lock for the charge port door please!!!! A moron push my charge port door and left it open while my MME was I an uncle club parking lot. People could have walked pass by and hit the port and the fender.
My gas cover has worked the same way for a long time on multiple vehicles and this has really never been an issue.

I think people did it because of it was an EV. They are either some kind of hole or they are just curious. It could be just the city where I am at. I have seen several gas car with gas doors open.

Same. When you think about it.....the people that are likely to be at the station are people who already have the means to charge there. So why would they need your adapter? Are they gonna steal it out of spite bc they don't like you charging there? C'mon man! Most of those Tesla drivers aren't even worried about you.

And it would be a real stretch for some stranger driving or walking by to all of a sudden determine that they need your adapter so that they can get paid by selling it on eBay. And then it's even a bigger stretch to think that there roaming groups of NACS adapter thieves looking to make a killing on those sweet, sweet NACS adapters.
It seems silly but in today’s world it is absolutely people that will grab your adapter for a quick profit. No stretch of the imagination at all

In a land where fools are stealing DCFC cables outright, I get it. However, many V3 and V4 pedestals have a dock built-in. I think this is only a 3-4 year problem as those older pedestals are slowly life-cycled. The solution you came up with looks pretty good! At the very least, it makes your thief take more time.
Will Tesla continue to update chargers when all other car companies start producing cars with NACS plugs?

I'd be way more concerned about someone breaking a window ($damage) and stealing valuables in the car itself. A Snatch & Grab of my backpack would cost me 10 X's the price of the adapter.

True, unless you (or I) are on a long trip with scarce DC charging choices and a theft of the adapter would leave the car with not enough juice to get anywhere easily. This would mean falling back on Level 2 (of any kind) or even a 120V Level 1, and a significant delay.

I've driven thru South Dakota and Wyoming and far northern Wisconsin in the Mach E and when I did those drives back in 2022 and 2023 this was definitely true in those areas. Of course, this is all incrementally changing for the better.

There are 60 some locations in the US and Canada. Tesla committed to 3,500 chargers with Magic Docks by year end.

We have access to 15,300 chargers with an adapter. So not "many" have a Magic Dock.

See above.

I thought of that, and also of leaving the plate silver (its original color). After some thought, I realized it's akin to nuclear weapons... no point in having either if its existence is hidden, right? The point is to make the other party think a little bit...
I have always said to my wife that locks are for. honest people it helps keep them honest. If a thief wants something bad enough they will figure out how to steal it. I like your approach as it may not keep a true thief from taking it but it will keep the more honest people honest.

Yes I agree thank you. Most petty theft is AFAIK opportunity theft... professionals are a different breed.

I don’t see their pace in deploying MagicDocks to be anything beyond NEVI bids that they win. I definitely think it will be a few years. I’ll have to look into the 60 sites number. I thought it was more than that. I do believe the need for adapters will increase over time. In the later part of the next 10 years I suspect there will start to be new NACS-only sites from vendors other than Tesla. That’s kind of the point of settling on a standard.

yeah, I'm of the mind this is solving a problem that does not wildly exist..
Is this a widespread problem? No, in part because even the use of such adapters isn’t “widespread” at this point. But I’d also say that as low as the risk of adapter theft might be, it isn’t zero and I’d be reluctant to leave my car if I were charging in certain situations. I do not object to people researching potential safeguards if they have the time and resources.

I live out in an area where it isn't uncommon to see an EV charging spot getting ICE'd.

It wouldn't be a stretch for some of the same knuckle draggers to not only unplug your car for giggles, but when they figure out that you're using an adapter, decide to toss it off into the weeds or haul it off with them to figure out what it brings on eBay.

Do I think the likelihood of that happening is all that great? Nope. But you can't rule it out either.

I watched an EV owner calmly stab the four tires of the ICE vehicle that was in a charging spot last year. The kicker was that there were plenty of open spots other than the one who was iced, so the idiocy can run both ways. If you are the person who does not wait in his car while charging, then, as Willie Scott sang, "Anything Goes"..

I always stay with the vehicle, 99% of the time my wife and I are traveling together when DC fast charging, and one of us is always at the vehicle. When I bought the truck I was by myself, and was out of sight for the time it took to hit the bathroom at Walmart.

If I saw anyone stab 4 tires, I would be calling the police.
