You could just make a note card, that you place on the dash or windshield, reminding you to check to see that the charge port is closed when you prepare to charge.
Or, you could just start closing the door, just after unplugging, then hang up the charger handle and cable. The charger plug handle and cable are not that heavy or awkward after all.
The entire charge port door design is terrible. Ford should have made this electric and self closing and it should go down and not over to one side or the other. My Audi e-tron charge port door is electric and self closes once they charger is removed.

I hang a yellow microfiber towel on it when it is open, I use same towel to close door to avoid fingerprints and store it with the wrapped up charging cord on the hook during the day.

Time to change habit patterns. Unplug the EVSE, then immediately close the charge port door. Do not coil up, hang up or drop the EVSE cord until you’ve closed the charge port door. Your homework assignment for the next 20 days. ;)

Big square warning on instrument panel. If you can't see that, perhaps you should reconsider driving.

Put a piece of paper on the seat. If that doesn’t work, seriously turn in your license.

NO thanks! It will break. Keep it simple. Or it will get even a tiny bit of ice on it and suddenly won't release. Happened with the gen 1 Volt all the time that had an electric springed release.

Observant suggestion my friend

Since you know your personal habits, why even start an EV knowing it’s quiet when you are not awake ? Better yet don’t drive anything until you are fully awake!
It’s not just for you or the charge door but it’s for the safety of others

NGL, I’m shocked this is even a thread. It’s like when you’re not driving an EV, and pumping gas, there’s standard practices.

God forbid you forget you’re even plugged in and just take off. Point of my message..If you’re forgetting to simply close the door before getting in your car, maybe you should slow down and build better habits.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who keeps a microfiber towel in the car. That's how I close the Frunk. I find myself using the Frunk more than the Trunk. MY kingdom for an electronic Frunk like the Lightning. I usually close the charge port door with my elbow/sleeve.

It will not start with cord plugged in.

Except that I have seen my wife's charger door pop out in the middle of driving. The theory is the heat affecting the plastics in the mechanism. I'd hate to see the system affecting the driving capabilities due to Ford's own design flaws.
This has happened to me as well

I saw my first E-Tron up close at an EA station last week. The charge port design was the first thing I noticed (the fact that it was in used probably contributed). It’s freakin cool!

I will admit that I have had similar experiences of forgetful behavior. Mine is more clumsy behavior first thing in the morning. What you are experiencing is sleep inertia. Some may be more sensitive to it than others. Plenty of tips online to help. It may be the reason you are not processing a routine task and clear warnings about the door being open

I haven't had the problem personally, but I suspect part of the problem is the warning design. Why not have it speak "Warning charge door open?", I would expect the car to be able to do that. There is no audio clue, and it's displayed when you are looking behind you or at the center console's rear camera and not at the dash in front. By the time you are in drive and looking forward it's too late.
