The conspiracy theorists would claim there is about 6 degrees of separation between these thieves and oil stakeholders. :p
That is a lot of separation, I think you mean 1 or 2 degrees of separation

Sadly the only legal solution is probably to add expense. Create a cable arm that slides in and out of the unit behind a locking door. The door only unlocks after you've authorized. This obviously means no more plug and charge unfortunately.

Only legal solution? We could actually try prosecuting the thugs that do this...

The alternative is to go to the European model (bring your own cable ?)

I am pretty confident they are being prosecuted if caught, not sure what you think is happening...

Most of these stations are not in super well lit or commonly traveled areas at 2 in the morning. Like thieves that steal catalytic converters, you can about guarantee many of them are quite quick at it. If there is something of value and it isn't obviously guarded or near a lot of activity, there will always be opportunists that try to steal it.

I agree that finding the shops buying it would be key, but I imagine with copper it's possible to get it stripped down to a point that even a legit copper buyer would take it.

you see, you live in Michigan... I am originally from Michigan... where from my experience these things would be prosecuted. I now live in the I-5 Crime enablement corridor (Seattle to LA) where these activities are not prosecuted. In Portland where I live, car theft is largely not prosecuted.

Or, come up with a way that the cable activates when it senses being cut. They can shovel the smoking remains out of the spot and let the next car charge pretty quickly I would think. Yes, it would require sprinklers to complete the circuit, but that is easily doable.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fiber can be used in place of copper wire in some applications:
  • CNTs
CNTs are cylindrical structures made of a single layer of carbon atoms. They can be single-walled or multiwalled, and have a length-to-diameter ratio of up to 132,000,000-to-1. CNTs are highly conductive and lightweight, and can be used as a winding material in electrical machines. CNTs can also be used in automotive, aerospace, and defense applications. CNT wires can be coated with polymer insulation and cut and stripped with the same equipment as copper wire.
  • Carbon fiber
Carbon fiber can be stronger and lighter than titanium, and can be made to be stronger than many metals. Carbon fiber can be used in composite materials with other materials, such as aluminum, to create conductors that are lighter, stronger, and more durable than traditional conductors. For example, a carbon fiber core conductor can be 50% lighter and 20% stronger than an ACSR conductor, and can reduce line losses by up to 10%.

Note, those white sponsored blocks I have been seeing in our discussions are from a company called "Yieldmo" and if you click on them you can opt out.

That is illegal. And inhuman.

Our local EVGo at Whole Foods appears to have been hit by cable thieves recently.

So seems like there's been at least 3-4 stations with cut cables in the Seattle area this week? They need to find this guy and make him pay.

Not sure if this would be legal, but they could make the wire "live" going to the plug. It is my understanding that the wire is only "hot" when plugged into the car. If the wire was "hot" before that point, one would get zapped (and possibly killed) if they tried cutting it.

If you placed warning signs similar to transforming stations, I would guess that would at least protect those that adhere to warning signs?

Now they would need to engineer to have the power cut off as soon as it was cut though but it would be live when cutting it. With the amount of voltage going through those cables, I would guess it would arc enough that even with insulated cutters, one would be vulnerable?

Just a thought...............
You're suggesting we punish this crime with (potential) death. I'm hoping that this is not intentional.
