A lot of insurance companies will waive the deductible to have it fixed instead of replaced. From the pictures, that looks like it can be repaired.
The fact the windshield is laminated is probably the only reason the rock didn't come through. This was a large rock and I was able to see it get shot up from the car in front of me and straight into my windshield. The crack is about a fifty cent piece. I've always gone by the rule of thumb that if its larger than a quarter it has to be replaced. If they can repair it that would be awesome and save a lot of money overall, but I don't have high hopes for this.

Even the small chips I've had repaired catch my eye occasionally while I'm driving. A monster like that would be a huge distraction. If they suggest repair I would push for a new windshield if I were you.

Supposedly Safelite recalibrates it. Quote I received from them was about $1100. But with my insurance it would be just $500.
Sounds about right... I did my 2019 Mustang GT with the calibration. About the same price.

I'm going to push for the replacement even if they offer to repair it. I'm just not sure how it'll go with it being so new. This is where I just have to trust they are true professionals and great at their craft.

Quarter is the size possible for DIY kits. Professionals can repair larger damage.

True that they are not perfect. Personally with it mostly on the passenger side I would at least get a professional opinion, but if was in main line of site for the drive I probably would want to get it replaced.

It cannot be repaired !!! Windshield are consider structural part. The cracks cause a
integrity issue. Any break, star larger a nickel need to be replaced.

It can't be repaired, and no, professionals can't repair larger damage, and it has nothing to do with the size being a quarter. I suppose some glass guy who just does repairs might try but not if they were honest.

That crack is significantly spidered. There are at least 4 cracks ready to split further the moment the suction equipment goes on and puts pressure on the glass. Second, those are surface layer cracks, you won't be able to get the air out the hole because it will come back through the cracks. Third, the center hit is too large, which will also prevent an effective suction. Someone could slather some resin in it, make it look smaller because some of the air will go away but they might also crack the whole windshield, which will probably happen on a hot day or when you slam the door.

It's just bad lock.

This type of situation being frequent on CA highways plus having a glass roof is why we decided to go with a $0 comprehensive deductible on the MachE. Especially after seeing the posts about some of the panoramic roofs cracking. Premium difference was very minimal and an option for CA policyholders.

From the initial point it hit I fully expected to replace it. I’m not really mad because something like this is completely beyond my control. Sucks but it’s just bad luck as you said. I’m just happy my pregnant wife and I were safe.
My only real concern was just how long it would take to replace and quality of replacement. With the ME being so new I wouldn’t expect OEM parts to be readily available. I was able to get an appointment for replacement and recalibration with Safelite next Monday. My other option is to call the dealerships around here and see if they can do it this week. My insurance has a contract with Safelite so it makes it easier, but I’ll just get reimbursed if a dealership can help me out.

I’ve been fairly luck so far (knock on wood). I’ve been back since 2019 and this is the first time it’s happened. Plus my daily commute to work includes the 5, 110, and 105. Ive thought about lowering my comprehensive deductible, but $500 is an amount I’m comfortable with.

Yikes, the 5, 110 and 105 every day? You’re a better man than I. I hope you got the carpool sticker so you can zip past all the traffic.

La Crescenta to El Segundo. 210 to the 2 to the 5 to the 110 to the 105. Not as bad as it sounds, but that commute is the whole reason why I could afford the ME.
I’m debating whether or not to get the sticker. I have a Fasttrak which helps and bringing my future kid to the child development center will allow me to use the carpool lane later on. But I can’t justify putting a big sticker on the car. Maybe if I throw it on a magnet and just put the magnet on when I need it.

I wasn't really responding to you. I used to get paid to do this (about the only thing I know how to do on a car except replace filters and wiper fluid) so I know something about the glass repair side. I just went to Safelite and they're saying up to 6-inches, which I don't believe. Tech could have changed or gotten better, I guess, but they used to do the worst repairs, way back in the day.

Even, Safelite is saying $1K ($650 glass, $350 recalibration). My car is about the same as it has a HUD. Checked another one and even the Hyundai was $850. All these windows have rain sensing wipers, safety equipment, etc., I guess the days of $300 window replacements are long gone.
