The ability to precondition the battery for fast charging should NOT be a premium offer. I hope everyone raises hell if Ford tries to leverage that as a way to convince people to pay $80/yr.

They should allow CarPlay to do it anyway. It’s annoying to have to input the directions in the built in navigation (which has a terrible, and slow UI) when I’m using CarPlay anyway.

It’s $80 and you can use FordPass points.

So what happens if you don’t renew?

Can you not use NAV at all, or is it just that your maps aren’t updated?

In past vehicles if you didn’t pay, you just didn’t get map updates (which rarely was an issue).

I have the same question.

I plan to let my Nav expire in a couple of months and see how usable it is afterwards. And if it's completely broken, I'll fork over the $80.
New roads are not added very often in these parts of New England... It's really more about the list of chargers that must be selected from to get preconditioning before DCFC.

You can still use the onboard Navigation. The subscription is for the connected features , live traffic, weather, yelp reviews, parking information, charging station status, intellegent range.

I'm unclear about how Ford Charge (fka: Ford Charge Assist) will/won't work without the connectivity plan.

Dang, I’m at the 3 year mark and I didn’t want to pay the $80.
What happens is your navigation becomes inoperable. You can still see the live map, but you cannot enter any locations - it is just a moving map.

We have options nav-wise:
  • Built-in nav, with or without connected features
  • Google Maps via CarPlay or Android Auto
  • Apple Maps on CarPlay
  • Waze
  • ABR
My experience is that the built-in nav is not so good compared to any of the ones that are on any mobile phone for free. It looks like a basic nav from 2010 and has no other redeeming qualities. So, why pay $80/year for an inferior product?

Both Apple and Google have detailed local congestion data. Google is pretty nice in suggesting alternative routes

They should just provide a manual setting for preconditioning, like GM does.

Best way to force Ford’a hands: send the info to a lot of newspapers and magazines to give them so much crap for locking precondition and basic features in a 60 000 (!) dollar car behind various subscriptions. How many subscriptions do they try to lure you into now - 3? (NAV, BC, plug and charge network (which you can still use fine without subscription btw)).

Let me remind you that the other cars like for examples Ionics are both cheaper while offering no subscriptions at all. Subscriptions can be justified if the buying price is low, but for a premium car these nicks and dimes should be on Ford’s as a goodwill for everything else (winter turtle, HVBJB etc.) as a customer satisfaction measure. The EV marked has a lot of good options now, manufacturers that take their buyers (and new ones) for granted should feel the weight of their strategy. Don’t be a useful tool for these type of things by defending this practice.

Good luck finding a newspaper or magazine still in business!

That said, why would this be newsworthy? Pretty much every car company does this.

It’s pay now or pay later or pay monthly.

Is your argument that it should be free?

I don’t know if any manufacturer that kept NAV maps updated for free.

Even the standalone GPS companies like Garmin have always made you pay for map updates.

The irony of you saying that the ioniq doesn’t have “subscriptions….”

The entire car can be a subscription service!

But yes, they also charge for Navigation map updates-

By newspapers this includes those having webpages, it’s just a general word for it. Could call it publishers maybe for clarity.

It is a difference on some simple map updates and removes the precondition function which is really needed in the Nordic countries. But each to their own.

And no, the Ionic does not demand a subscription service of any kind to be able to use the precondition service, at least not in Europe.

Why should we make excuses for companies? Do we want them to take away more of our functions? Because as long as we do not complain, this is what will happen. Seat heats next? Maybe they will make it premium to fast charge? Sky is the limit!

Not heard of this.

?to all car makers’ sat nav, they’re all shite IMO.

Won’t use clunky awkward systems when there’s a perfectly good alway up to date option, and Apple Maps ain’t free, new ‘phone every few year costs me c£1,200 and worth ever penny for all the tech that is user friendly and works first time, every time.

Sorry, but no need for the slippery slope argument.

Charging for navigation updates is as old as navigation.

This is nothing new, not newsworthy and unlikely to ever change.

There are plenty of other things worth complaining about and fighting.

Even if you “won this fight,” you wouldn’t really “win” anything. All they would do is charge us more for navigation up front and include “lifetime map updates.”

The winners in that situation? Not YOU. The winner would be the next person you sell your car to because they won’t have to pay to update maps.

Not sure why recently so many people are all of a sudden against the idea of monthly payments for things. Hardly a new concept and just a different way to pay for stuff.

What’s next? We fight the cell phone companies because I paid $1000 for my phone and the service should be free? Sky is the limit! ?

There is absolutely something psychological about how people think about these things. Many people wouldn’t bat an eye at a $500 higher MSRP at the time of purchase, but would sooner see hell freeze over than pay $80 a year for three years of navigation starting at year 4 of ownership before selling the car in year 6.

Unless you paid extra up-front and bought the "LMT" version of the Garmin device. Of course, while you have Lifetime Maps and Traffic, the batteries on those things don't hold up well and eventually the things won't even work when they're plugged into the lighter socket. ?‍♂?
