Just back from my test drive. I didn’t want to waste my hour playing around with the settings and the screen, I just wanted to experience the drive as much as possible, so there are bound to be a few more HMI pros and cons in time.
Cons:
Brakes - nothing, nothing, everything. Really not good in traffic. Nauseating. Hopefully this is just a case of the brakes needing to break in, but if not it’s going to take some getting used to... super sensitive when they finally engaged.
Regen - to strong for my liking... I would like to be able to adjust its strength. Unfortunately if you turn it off, then you’re playing duck duck goose with the brakes... I’m hoping Ford can offer something OTA to address this and the brakes and together, they make traffic unpleasant.
Auto Hold - Pulling away with it engaged is just awful. Jolt and go. It sucks... turn it off.
HVAC - controls on the touch screen don’t really work... felt dangerous trying to adjust while driving. You have to look really far down the screen and play around with small buttons and slider... not good. Needs to be easier to do while driving, but not sure they can fix that OTA.
Pros:
Steering feedback - probably the best I’ve ever experienced. The ratio seems spot on. Tiny bit of understeer on tight corners which is fun. Love the actual steering wheel itself too... thicker than I was expecting. It compliments the weight of the car, which you can feel.
Ride dynamics - fantastic. All the talk of springy suspension had me worried, but it felt very composed. No noticeable body roll, really comes into its own in the bends. Tiny bit bounce on one particularly poor patch of road, but only at higher speeds. On the same road in other cars I’ve driven (Mazda CX-5, Audi A4) you get more severe thuds which make you grimace and wonder if you still have an undercarriage... so in this instance, I prefer a bit of bounce.
Really enjoyed Whisper which I thought I’d never use. Preferred unbridled on the motor way and whisper in the city which is probably the opposite of what Ford intended, but different strokes. Throttle tip in ok unbridled was too aggressive for the city traffic... but I do love it’s aggression.
Loved the ride height. Looks like it should be low from the outside, but feels nice and high in the drivers seat
Space - so much space. Felt like I could’ve swum around it. My knee was okay, close to the screen, but thankfully not touching. The rear passenger space is fantastic. Great for the child seat. My little ones feet are normally all over the back of the front passenger seat, but she couldn’t reach it... huge plus since she refuses to listen when I tell her not to put her grubby shoes on it.
Speed and acceleration - Considering I was in the slowest model (SR RWD), I’m probably going to be slightly intimidated by the AWD ER... it really has good get up and go. You don’t notice the speed... this could be both pro and con.
I feel like I need to mention the steering and handling again, I’m actually blown away.
Wish I had more time with it. But, thankfully, I won’t be cancelling my order.
