what if there are some major improvements (i.e., RANGE, 0-60, etc.).
Nissan did this with the Leaf. Their 3 year sequence was
Year 1 smaller battery
Year 2 bigger battery is an option along with some other new gizmos
Year 3 bigger battery becomes standard

I don't think we'll see that in the 2022 Mach E, though.

I guess new colors other than 50 shades of grey and optionnal heat pump ($450 on the Volvo XC40 recharge)
50 Shades of Grey is a special option actually. You get a Mustang-branded whip and leather clothes with Mach-E branding.

Dang it. That's gonna be some awkward timing coming to market in Late 2021 surrounded by 2022s.
Not sure that matters as much for a specialty item like a Mach E GT, especially if they change little to nothing in 2022. How much do you need to update in a 2022 if all the 2021s sell on special-order.

  • One or two new colors and one color dropped
  • Decontenting
  • Shifting previously “standard” features on both the Select and the Premium into “packages” (such as “Convenience”, “Comfort”, and “Luxury”). Maybe Ventilated, 12 way seats would be tossed into a package.
  • B&O sound system goes into a package on the Premium (in other words, you’ll have to pay for it).

  • Sad

I'd be surprised if we see a major change in range or battery size. There may be small changes as a benefit of improved firmware on the inverters and other components, but the volumetric energy capacity of 2021 batteries are very similar to those of 2022 batteries, and right now across the battery industry supply is already basically sold out through the end of 2022.

Hopefully it will have bug fixes, maybe another color option, and possibly a small boost to EPA range or rated power as a result of improved software, but not as a result of actual hardware or chemistry changes.

I think Ford will hit the 200,000 vehicle limit for the federal tax credit in 2022. Until then, I think Ford will try to sell as many higher margin well equipped models as they can. After the tax credit expires, I think they will try to break some of the current standard equipment into options to help them hit lower price points later.

If Ford stays true to history the only change would be a different grill insert, changing from a 260 cu in. motor to a 289cu in and a different instrument cluster. The body was the same.

Oh sorry - I thought we were talking about the 64 and a half vs the 65 Mustang. My bad,

If they did add tilt to the seats that would make me wait. That was the only thing I didn't like after sitting in the road show cars.
