I'm looking for some sort of wall or door passthru so I can pass the charger connector through a wall or the door, when I connect my charger to the dryer outlet. The car is in the garage and the dryer is in the utility room at the door. I would like something that has a closure on it to close it when I'm not charging. A doggy door is too big. I have seen cord wall passthru's on Amazon but they may be too small. Anyone have any suggestions?

Look for RV or marine pass through doors on Amazon. Measure the J-1772 handle and pick one that fits. You may want to go a little larger like this:

That’s going to violate some building and electrical codes. FYI. You’ll need fireproof sealant.

Would you mind explaining what you mean?

I think he means in most jurisdictions, the garage to house wall has to have a certain fire rating. Cutting a hole in the wall, adding a dog door, or otherwise leaving something open would violate building code since it would allow a fire to easily pass from the garage into the house unless the passthrough featured some type of firestop or intumescent collar.

I'm also of the opinion that running a cord inside to the dryer outlet for anything other than a very temporary solution (e.g. such as visiting the in-laws for a weekend) is a dangerous hack job. Insurance will frown upon that practice if there any kind of loss. Just pay to get an outlet installed in the garage the proper way so it can be safe.

It's also prohibited in the National Electrical Code:

NEC ARTICLE 400 — FLEXIBLE CORDS AND FLEXIBLE CABLES

400.12 Uses Not Permitted. Unless specifically permitted in 400.10, flexible cables, flexible cord sets, and power supply cords shall not be used for the following:

(1) As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure

(2) Where run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors

(3) Where run through doorways, windows, or similar openings

That’s correct. Where I live, the door between my garage and my home (it opens directly into a small hallway/mudroom has to be fire-rated (I don’t know the specific fire rating, but the door is metal. The drywall on the “house” wall is also fire-rated.

You might also want to check the forum for threads discussing receptacles burning up. EV charging is best done on an industrial grade receptacle like
Bryant 9450FR it’ll handle continuous
duty. It’s unlikely that your commercial grade dryer receptacle will be happy carrying full load for the hours it takes to charge, mine wasn’t.

Gotcha. I forgot the OP was running the cable from inside the house into the garage. I was thinking they were running it outside from the garage, which doesn't require fire-rating in most cases.
