We had to rent a Model Y pay month while our bumper was being repaired after a hit & run.

This is the first in a series of videos we made with the Model Y.

It was nice and Supercharging was good to have, but there are differences that made us appreciate our Mach-E

Have both and tripping in the y is awesome. 65mph cruising runs 3.7kwh at 50 deg heated seats on low. Gtpe same runs 2.7. Enjoy both ev which are keepers.

Some interesting observations:
  • The route planning allows 1% arrival? Wow, precision. Ford is fixed at 20% (too conservative). Default should be 10% or 15%.
  • 275 Wh/mi is impressive for a road trip, that's 3.6 mi/kWh. Much more efficient than the GTPE!
  • 250 kW charging speed is also impressive compared to the Mach-E.
  • Yes, plugging in a DC charger and walking away without checking is novel to us. Shows how bad CCS charging is.
  • All the Teslas look the same and you can't tell which one is yours! ? Boring!
  • The Model Y subwoofer is huge (size of a small suitcase) compared to the Mach-E. Almost oversized in my opinion. Unfortunately a lot of people value how good a sound system is based off how loud the bass is only. I hate boomy bass so I probably would have to turn it down like you.
Looking forward to the Autopilot vs. BlueCruise comparison from a Mach-E person instead of a Tesla person.

Here's one of the interesting comments on the YouTube video since I showed how the Model Y would frequently phantom brake when passing semi trucks.

Ford Mustang Mach-E We took a Model Y road trip 1701040635857

"Phantom braking: The car will not phantom brake if you have AP or ACC locked onto a car ahead of you, It won't phantom brake at night, However, it's worst when there's a mirage effect on the road surface and then I would advise you to let other cars pass and then lock onto them with AP. I will take precautions to not let other cars follow me closely when a mirage effect is noticeable."

Seems like a lot of trouble just to keep it from phantom braking.

LOL autopilot works best when it can just lock onto another car? and you have to monitor for possible "mirages"? camera only ADAS systems are wild.

Ok, I’m now instituting a ‘no Tesla Lock’ when in the freeway. (This explains why I’ve tried to make Teslas pass me in the HOV but they just won’t. They’ll pass me at nearly 100mph on the right, through the off ramp though, or on any Starbucks parking lot.)

I watched the video Patrick. The being put in FSD "time out" is ridiculous. I'm still on BC 1.0 and it already works much better for me than how FSD appeared to work for me. Ford is missing a big opportunity by charging $800/yr for BC. Most people, myself included, won't pay that compared to the original $600/3 years.

But I won't lie. The ability to take my hands off the steering wheel so I can open a snack wrapper or change from my eyeglasses to my sunglasses is quite nice. Definitely something I will miss when my trial runs out.

If I was commuting like I did in 1971 thru 2005 66 miles daily with traffic stand still 3 miles from tunnel a entrance I would gladly pay. Now retired I actually enjoy driving especially in GTPE. Lately been driving the Y and must say its pretty pretty nice.

Nice video

I don’t miss Autopilot phantom braking and disengaging when you tap the wheel too hard or just want to steer briefly. It’s become my least favorite ADAS. AP can also phantom brake on unmapped roads (I think Tesla uses Tom Tom). The new I-4 ultimate express lanes weren’t mapped initially and Teslas would default to 50mph when the cars (randomly) detected they were not on the normal lanes. This was a reoccurring compliant on Florida Tesla FB groups.

I do miss Sentry, voice controls, Tesla efficiency, Superchargers, and the audio system.

With Plug and Charge there have been a few times I’ve just plugged in and walked away. Only at EA chargers that look like they are working lol.

Its nice owning the GTPE and Y. My default is on the sport side and mood swings on the more minimalistic. Choice is pretty pretty good as Larry David would often say.
