It is the redesign of the Focus electric,, made larger to accommodate the frunk and bigger battery for range, they should’ve left it the Focus.

The T Bird has been rebooted once already.
Aside from the tail lights and RWD it doesn’t share anything with an actual Mustang

I think it should have just named the Mach E minus the Mustang

That is what I call it. But people seem to always reply “You mean the electric Mustang?”

[absolutely agree ? cripples me when I’m stuck behind one of these, they are all over Glasgow in and sends me into an abyss ? QUOTE="MuckyMach-e, post: 877679, member: 11967"]
Um, no to the Galaxy name in the UK please. The Ford Galaxy minivan was only discontinued last year ?

I really like my new Mach E. I haven’t found much not to like. But I admit that the “Mustang” monicker embarrasses me a bit.
One of my buddies asked me what I thought they should have called it? Before the question I had not given that any thought. I spent an evening contemplating and I have my answer. What is yours?
The MME is the first Ford I have owned but I grew up with Fords, learned to drive in a ‘58 Country Sedan, 292 V8 3 on the tree with overdrive. I remember when the Mustang was introduced and what a departure it was after the failure of Edsel.
and it occurred to me that the era held the answer to what the Mach E should have been named……(Drumroll)…..The Galaxy! A long dormant name from Ford’s past that has the connotation of being about something extra terrestrial and beyond our reach.
Missed opportunity if you ask me.
I have owned and worked on every iteration of the mustang. I‘m glad they didn’t call it Granada. But I would have been fine with Mach-E, that’s what I call it.

I am perfectly happy with the Mustang name.

But I also totally would have brought back the Thunderbird for an EV.
Rebadging it as a TBird would be a fun project. Especially with an animated bird puddle light.

I'm not sure what they should have called it, but definitely "Mustang" was a cynical choice in order to cash in on the name recognition. IMO, this electric crossover SUV has nothing to do with the legacy of the Mustang moniker. It was born, heart and soul, in 2021 as its own entity. Just wish they would have named it something original. Oh well, c'est la vie.
I don't think it was "cynical" exactly.

Ford started with a fairly generic crossover concept that likely would have been something like an EV Edge, and when Farley saw it he was worried it would put people to sleep. He wanted to do it as a Mustang in part to help potential customers connect emotionally.

The car lives up to the nameplate. It looks great and the driving experience feels fantastic. Yes, muscle cars are supposed to feel torquey and heavy. The driving position and the view out over the hood both feel very authentic. My only real objection to the Mach-E being branded a Mustang is that it's not at least available as a legit 2dr coupe. I really hope Ford addresses this in a subsequent generation, but I also get that 2dr coupes are harder to pass side impact standards and the market for 2drs in general is very limited. One other, more minor complaint is that while the instrument panel is pleasant and has a premium feel. it doesn't feel especially "sporty" (I think the new EV Dodge Charger has a much sportier IP, for instance).

In my case, Ford did a great job in establishing that emotional connection. I'd committed to a Bolt EUV but when I actually gotten to drive the Mach-E I knew within a couple of blocks that I found the car considerably more appealing. I've had many strangers express approval of a Mustang crossover (not even realizing it's an EV). I think it's the best-looking EV this side of a Macan, even after a few years on the market.

So yes, to me, the Mach-E is totally a Mustang.

I won't deny that the styling of the main body resembles the Focus, but the Mach-E is significantly larger.

Anybody remember the Mustang II, or any of the crapbox Fox-body mustangs of the 80s aside from the SVO, later GTs, and Cobra? Those were embarrassments to the Mustang name.

we are 4 model years in, and people are resurrecting THIS? ?

And (at least in the US) the vehicle name was spelled “Galaxie”, not “Galaxy”. Let’s at least get that correct.

And why isn’t anyone pushing for LTD? ???

I get the impression Ford didn't really want to call it a Mustang themselves - but needed a recognizable nameplate for some instant recognition. And ultimately they also saw the benefit of the conflict in the name. But that's nothing more than a hunch.

The trouble with pulling an old name and reusing it (like the Galaxy) is that the younger buyers you might want to attract to your fancy new EV aren't going to have any ties to that name whatsoever, if they even recognize it at all. They'd end up right in the same place that the European Ford business is currently in with the new "Capri". You have a bunch of people that used to have Capris and are upset because it's not anything at all like a Capri and another bunch of people that know nothing of that name and just don't care.
When BMW introduced an SUV the reaction was “Wow!”. When Porsche introduced an SUV the reaction was “Wow!”. Same for Jaguar and a number of other brands that had never had them before. Same for passenger cars from Maserati and others. Same for EV announcements from entities like Ferrari. Mustang people - “that’s not a Mustang.” That’s ok. As a former Porsche owner I would always say “that’s not a Porsche”.
