I went to my brothers house for an early Thanksgiving last weekend.

His wife’s daughter came in and asked, who’s Mustang is that?

I proudly said it was mine!

No negative comments about the Mustang name…

I just call it the Mach.

As a ponycar guy, I was against calling it a "Mustang" from the start. It has grown on me so that I am not against it any more. The name is still too long for me so I just call it a "Mach-E GT-Performance Edition" (which is already too long). ??
I should also note that in a similar vein I call my Firebird Trans Am a “Trans Am” because i am lazy. ??

I still call mine an MME. It stands for "Missed Mach E". It has been in the shop going on a month now with no definitive date that I will get it back.

Can we just put the final coffin nail in and call it an Edsel already? The Edsel was more times than not in the repair shop and people were excited before it came out per the link.

Ahh, how history repeats itself...............

I have owned and worked on every iteration of the mustang. I‘m glad they didn’t call it Granada. But I would have been fine with Mach-E, that’s what I call it.
I echo this sentiment. I'd have just named it the Mach-E. Left the tail light (3 bar design) design. Between the tail lights and the Mach monacker everyone would have "gotten it".

What a bunch of who- ha…….
Ford choose to call it a Mustang,
It looks a little like a Mustang, it performs better than some Mustangs.
Personally I use Ford Mach-e to describe it, and don’t add the Mustang moniker.

Bill P

A revival of the Thunderbird name would have
been appropriate.
The Thunderbird name was such an obvious choice. It's been a transformative brand of Ford for decades and the name fits to the electric nature of the car.

As much as I like the pony logo welcome-light glowing on the ground at night, the Thunderbird logo would have looked amazingly cool.

In my opinion, the use of the Mustang name was entirely a ride-the-coat-tails choice by marketing and the internal politics of Ford from people who hate that their most recognized product is a RWD muscle sedan car.

I guess it's better than just, "trans"!
Well, at least they didn’t use the full name of the series to name the car: Sports Club of America Trans-American Championship Cup.” ??

The SCCA got a $5 licensing fee for each car sold. That meant next to nothing in the early ‘70s, but they sold over 129,000 of the things in 1979. Nearly half of all Firebird production in ’79. ??

The Edsel failed because it was the wrong car for the times it was introduced in. They needed the Falcon and the Mustang, but not another boulevard barge. And the styling was charitably referred to as “A Mercury sucking a lemon.”
It remains to be seen if the Mach E is the right car for the times. Obviously it was the right car for folks on this forum. But resistance to EVs is problematic. When (Not if) gas prices double there will be a big shift in what sells.

Even if gas prices double, I am not certain if the EV market will take off. I wish it would, but I am being realistic. The percentage of people that can afford them and want them are small (just like the Edsel).

It all comes down to the battery. If the battery had a longer range and shorter charging time, that would be your game changer.

Many of the EV's has had a host of tech problems that doesn't help the cause for anxiety etc..

Car companies will start to dump their EV lineups if the profit doesn't soon come in. The incoming administration will not help the cause for anyone other than Tesla and monopolies won't help the cause as well. If the mileage standard is dropped, say goodbye to the EV's.

So to sum up my comparison with the Edsel, quality and the prediction of what people will buy in to seems to fit the bill quite well. The Edsel was high price for a Ford and the MME is too high priced for the masses as well. Throw in sub par quality and you have a modern day Edsel my friend. The only thing the MME has is looks in comparison to the Edsel IMO.

Just imagine if you will, how an Edsel owner back in the day would have felt had their car been in the Shop for a month or more. They told their friends and those friends told their friends and the demise soon followed.

I hope I am wrong.

If we are going with animal themes, a fat cow comes to mind. Would you be happier with that name?

Who really cares if it’s a mustang or not.
You also have to consider that Ford wanted to make Mustang a sub-brand to take advantage of the name. But not sure if they will go forward with that.
