A question for you - why does anyone need to know when friction brakes engage? Curiosity, sure, but it makes no difference to your driving. The car is slowing down, one way or the other. It doesn't really matter if you're using friction or regen when it comes to not hitting the car in front of you.
Because I want to drive more efficiently (regen) and not waste my physical brakes.

This conversation has gotten WAY off track. My original point is that I would like a button on the steering wheel so that I can use just the regen by pressing it (no chance of using physical brakes). Yes, I can (and do) hit the 'L' button, but it is in an awkward spot, and I have to turn it on/off.

Because at some point I want to come to a complete (or quick) stop?
And when you have to do that you press the brakes until you stop. Once you request stopping power greater than what regen can produce, it engages the friction brakes.

Perhaps the confusion is thinking that regen is at teh exclusion of friction - the car can do both, and switches between them.

But if you use 1PD, you are using the most efficient regen possible. The computer is faster and smarter than a human. When you press the brakes, it uses all the regen it can before it applies the friction brakes.

I suppose if regular 1PD doesn't slow you down as much as you'd like in normal course you could use L, but I can spill my coffee every time by lifting rapidly. Not sure how much faster anyone would want to decelerate normally.

I also seriously doubt you would ever want to remove the system's option to apply the friction brakes. If you stomp on that brake pedal it's because you gotta stop NOW!, so you will certainly want the friction brakes to kick in then.

So, back on track, the button would be at best redundant, and probably generally ignored by the system both for efficiency and safety reasons.

I know how physical brakes and regen work. I never asked about how they work, only that I want a button on the steering wheel to activate regen only (which I already restated in a recent post).

Cool - I responded to that point as well.

Well, it's a good thing I never suggested anything as ridiculous as that.

I have Kia Niro EV in addition to the MME and the Kia has an automatic regen selection that works very well. It uses the front radar to decide how much regen is applied. When there are no vehicles ahead. regen is minimum. The closer the vehicle ahead, the more regen is applied. Maybe the MME has something similar but I am still in the learning mode for the MME features. I know I don't like the lack of regen in the Whisper mode and I don't want to be pushing buttons to change the regen while I'm driving.

But you did:

The problem with this statement is... what do you mean by 'touch'? That's really vague. I prefer to have a separate button that does ONLY regen.

If you want max regen, lift off in 1PD in unbridled. If you want more decel than that, friction brakes will have to be added. The max amount of regen changes with speed and battery SoC, so sometimes the friction brakes have to be used to slow the car fast enough.

Regen is not linear due to motor physics, you get less kW going slower. You need to be going 40+ mph for max regen power.

If you want the most efficiency, drive with adaptive cruise on. It will regen as much as it can, but will also use the friction brakes if it needs to slow down faster than the regen available

If people have the power meter enabled you can see the regen happening when you press the brake pedal. Brake pedal will do both regen and friction at the same time. Mach-E can do regen+friction simultaneously in any mode, including cruise modes. Brake pedal will not move when hydraulic is being applied, unlike Tesla. You have no idea when hydraulic is being applied unless you’re monitoring brake pressure with a scan tool.

If there’s no traffic I can get away with 1PD without any friction brakes used, but in traffic you need the friction brakes at times to slow down fast enough.

Except I have no feedback as to how far I can push the brake pedal before the physical brake engages. And having to reach over to hit the 'L' (which I do sometimes) to turn it on and off is annoying...
I believe that's what the brake coach is for.

the problem with adaptive cruise is it can only react to the car in front of you; it can not predict needing to slow down based on traffic conditions farther up the road (stop lights, congestion, etc). But you can, which helps avoid the need to use friction brakes.

True, but if you shift your focus out to 2 cars ahead of you you can even avoid almost all of that, too. It'd be interesting to see how often friction brakes actually engage for me (other than the hold function).

Try switching the dial to neutral when "coasting" in 2 pedal drive. Then you will feel what coasting is really like (make sure there isn't anyone in front of you and be prepared).

I was surprised at how much regen comes out of "coasting" with 2-PD enabled. Apparently that disengages everything and it is only friction of the road and drive shaft that is slowing the vehicle down.

Regardless, it's a fun car to drive and playing with the modes makes it more interesting.

max regen in my AWD Select is right around -100 kW. The Selct doesn't have a power meter, but I display it in actual kW via ODB2 and CarScanner on my phone.

depending on speed you are going, if you hit the brake pedal to request more than -100kW braking power, then mech brakes mix in.
